"Would you like fries with that?"
"Excuse me?" asked Shinji.
"It might be awhile before you eat. Organic lifeforms consume matter of a compatible nature in order to fuel the various chemical reactions that drive everything else in their sadly limited four-dimensional forms."
Shinji held the phone away from his head for a moment, stared at it, then brought it back to where he could speak on it again. "I understand 'eating' all right. Not everything is that simple, you know. I wish it was simple enough for me to handle it, or there was a way to make more sense of it, but-"
Pause. Rewind. Play.
Shinji blinked.
He was no longer in an Eva.
He was no longer swallowed by Liliel.
He was no longer wearing a plugsuit.
"AGH! CLOTHES!"

"What?" asked Shinji, covering himself as best he could and glad that the streets were deserted. "Uhm. 'Casual Outfit'?"

Letting out a sigh of relief at being clothed again, Shinji twitched as he heard the approaching Angel and figured out where and when he was. "Oh hell."
The scene was playing out EXACTLY as he remembered it. So Shinji figured he had a few seconds before Misato showed up. Which meant he could run away from the approaching Angel and give himself a few minutes to figure out what was going on.
What had he wished for again? To have things simplified? Or to make more sense of it? Then when he'd yelped about needing clothes.
Shinji ducked around the corner of a building and frowned. "Damn. Wait. I could change my... outfit. Does that mean..."
Shinji debated whether he should even try this. Then finally came to a decision that it was too late NOT to try it.
"PAUSE!"
Everything faded to black and white. A piece of debris shooting through the air stopped where he could see it. He found he couldn't move from the spot, but he could at least try and figure things out. If this was like a videogame, then he should have-
"Stats!" called out Shinji, both hoping and dreading the potential results.

"Oh. I see," said Shinji.
