For as long as he could remember, Ash Ketchum had always dreamed of the day he would set forth on his Pokémon journey. Unfortunately, he didn't know what an actual adventure with Pokémon would be like. On his ninth birthday, Ash decided that when he started his journey the next year, he wanted to know as much about Pokémon as he could. Happy to see her son taking such interest in something, Deliah agreed to take Ash out to buy a Pokémon training instructional video.
Ash looked over the shelves of training videos found a DVD Box set until settling on one simply titled "Pokémon". Oddly enough the cover graphic featured a boy who looked almost exactly like Ash himself with a Pikachu perched on his shoulder. Ash brought the DVD set to his mother, who purchased the surprisingly cheap box.
Once he got home, Ash immediately went up to his room and put the DVD in. Immediately he was greeted by a catchy opening tune and a number of unknown Pokémon flying past the screen in space.
"I want to be the very best, like no one ever was..." Ash noticed that in addition to the boy who looked so much like him, there were people who looked exactly like his mother and Professor Oak, although as an international celebrity, Professor Oak was much less surprising.
The actual series began with a battle between a Gengar and a Nidorina. Ash was glued to the screen, until the protagonist appeared, watching a television which looked exactly like the one he was currently watching in a bedroom which looked a lot like his own. Ash was surprised to hear the narrator name the character as "Ash Ketchum".
Ash has never been accused of being a genius, but he was smart enough to know that what he was watching wasn't a normal DVD. Somehow, he was watching a prediction of his own future. Ash watched the entire series with rapt interest and almost immediately after finishing went out to pick up the second volume, telling Deliah that it was really interesting and educational. She took him out that day to pick up the second volume, which took the protagonist (AKA: Ash himself) through the Pokémon league, where he placed in the top 16.
A year later, having watched the entirety of the series currently available, Ash found himself watching the same battle from the first episode of the series. The next day, Ash would begin his journey for real.
