"You should stay away from that child!"
"Unclean."
"I told you to never play with him!"
Naruto watched the other kids getting scolded and his brief inclusion in the group ended. Probably forever.
The smile that had fitted itself onto his face drained away as if it had never been and he turned his way back home. Alone again, naturally.
He walked for awhile when he spotted some other kid, about his age, sitting on a pier and looking as if the world had done him a great disservice.
Naruto slowed as he looked. That kid was like him. He had the same loneliness.
In another world, another time, Naruto simply went on past. In this world, this time, he went closer.
"I don't want company," said the other boy as Naruto got closer.
"Meh, I'm just over here," said Naruto, figuring the boy had probably been told not to associate with him. "No reason for me to be anywhere else so here's as good as any."
The dark-haired boy snorted.
Naruto sat back on the grass and watched the clouds briefly.
"Everyone hates you," said Sasuke.
"Yeah," admitted Naruto.
"Why?"
"If you find out, can you tell me?" asked Naruto.
"Hnn."
"Say," said Naruto. "Wanna spar? Practice ninja skills?"
Sasuke considered that briefly. "Maybe later. Not in the mood right now."
Naruto was aware that the boy wasn't even facing him, and he was still watching clouds, but he grinned at that. It wasn't exactly a complete rejection was it?
