"I see," said the ANBU.
"Uhm, I don't get the mask symbols," said Naruto, sitting back and cocking his head as he looked at the mask in question. "I know you guys all have animal-motifs but I don't know why or what's involved with 'em."
"ANBU are given codenames and masks by the Hokage, the naming convention is traditional, and I am Ibis."
"What's an 'ibis'?" asked Naruto.
"I think it was given me because of my skill in fuuinjutsu," said Ibis. "An Ibis is a bird that normally stalks rivers and wetlands. Some consider the Ibis a symbol of learning."
"Cool! You know fuuinjutsu then?" asked Naruto eagerly.
"Alas," said Ibis. "I am nowhere near the skills to be a seal-master like Jiraiya or the Hokage. I am, however, competent at the basic underlying design and development."
"Eh?"
"Yes, I know something of fuuinjutsu."
"Oh, good."
"You're only three months away from graduating the Academy," said Ibis. "Are you sure you should be experimenting with these arrays? I think I'd be trying to get last minute studies in."
"Nah, I'm gonna PROVE I can be awesome!" declared Naruto. "Sakura says that she'd rather go missing-nin than ever date me! She says NO girl will ever be my friend! Well, I'm gonna prove her wrong!"
"That scroll indicates limiting parameters, that scroll has the main summoning, and that - shouldn't work at all," noted Ibis. "Interesting though. That mark there is 'chaos' and the circle around it indicates restraint. What's that there?"
"Little smiley face," said Naruto. "Invoke any deities around. Need all the help I can get to get this working."
"That's interesting," opined Ibis. Especially because the 'little smiley face' had almost seemed to wink at him.
"NOW!" said Naruto, nudging the last scroll into place before he bloodied his hand and hit the activation circle.
"Sir," said Ibis an hour later. "Uzumaki's 'Friend Summoning Fuuinjutsu' worked."
"Ah, so he managed a human-summoning on one of his associates from the Academy?" asked the Hokage.
"No sir," said Ibis. "He actually pulled someone from outside time and space in the agreement to be his friend."
"A shinobi from some other village?" asked the Hokage.
"Another universe entirely, sir."
The Hokage actually looked up from his paperwork. "Excuse me?"
"He summoned a girl from outside the universe who agreed to be his friend," said Ibis. "I fully expected it to fizzle out. Everything I know about summoning says it should have simply not worked. It worked. Do you want to meet her?"
The Hokage blinked. "You brought her to my office?"
"No, actually, she followed me and when I told her to wait outside the building, she did." Ibis spread his hands. "Apparently she feels that as Naruto's commanding officer, she should report to you."
The Hokage relaxed ever so slightly. "She's not a ninja, but a civilian and she - something else?"
"She's not human, sir," said Ibis. "She looks it. Mostly. But she isn't. I'm enough of a sensor to tell."
