Through the woods they trekked.
The leader of the search party was an old crone, wearing a Chinese outfit and pogoing on a gnarled staff taller than she was. She was here looking for her errant Son-in-Law, who had been banished from their home dimension only a month and a half ago . . . Or at least, it was a month and a half in her world.
Dimension travel was tricky like that. The only thing they knew was that he was still alive and healthy. Her scrying could determine nothing else.
Behind her walked her Great-Granddaughter, a statuesque Chinese girl with violet hair that hung down below her ass. She was normally a proud woman, but the events of the past week and a half in this new world had shaken her. Her eyes kept glancing around, looking out for ambushes from the strange denizens of this world.
In the center of the group walked two civilian girls. The first was a tall, long haired brunette of twenty years. Her demeanor was pleasant, and most people would say that she was oblivious of what was going on around her. In fact, of the members of the party, only two of them noted how, every so often, her delicate left eyebrow twitched ever so softly. Her dress, a modest housedress, was slightly rumpled.
Of the two paying attention to the above girl's distress, the only one who cared about it was right beside her. Her hair was a lighter brown than her older sister, and she wore sensible shoes, Capri jeans, and a green tank top. Despite her relaxed attire, she was anything but. She split her time worrying over her sister, glaring at the crone leading them, and jumping at the slightest of sounds. While many would think this out of character for her, the last several weeks had shaken her out of her comfort zone, so nobody in the group could blame her.
Bringing up the rear were two more girls, one gently dragging the other behind her. The first was a long haired brunette in a boyish looking restauranteur outfit, a giant spatula slung over her shoulders. The other was a shorter girl with short, dark blue hair. She wore jeans and a t-shirt, and was in a state of shock that had started barely three days ago.
The final member of the group couldn't be seen by casual eyes. Flitting through the trees was a shadowed figure, keeping an eye out for danger. This person had been instrumental in getting the females below out of several dangerous encounters. Normally a demure figure, the male kunoichi was deadly serious in its mission, sharing the same gloom that gripped the rest of the party.
It wasn't surprising. Despite how much he annoyed them, nobody wanted the late, lost member of their search party to be killed and eaten . . .
Under these conditions, something had to give. And as the sun sank into the horizon on the eleventh day of their sojourn, something did.
