Mischief Fragment - Fab-1: Fab2 completed [Episode 250475]

by Kestral

The storage shed was just that - an unused storage shed. Once, long ago, it had been used for the restaurant it had been attached to. The restaurant had gone out of business, its supplies and equipment redistributed, and it had been empty since.

The shed had warped sections of wood and missing shingles from the roof. A box, roughly twelve by twelve by fifteen.

The first thing Naruto did was build the interior framework of the mechanism.

Fab-1 made the rods that connected together to form the frame. The biggest part that could be made with Fab-1 was about the size of a loaf of bread.

"So," said Ibiki Morino, sitting nearby and watching. "I admit, there's a lot about this I don't understand."

"What don't you understand, Ibiki-sensei?" asked Naruto as he used a tool to tighten a bolt linking two long rods together.

"Any of it, actually," admitted Ibiki as he watched one of Naruto's shadow clones feeding scrap metal into the device called "Fab-1" so that another clone could remove another rod and put it on the stack.

"Fabber is the interface," said Naruto, tapping his wrist device and bringing up the little holographic keyboard and display.

[Active. Bringing up technical data.]

"Right," said Ibiki. "That device responds only to you and to those you authorize. Within limits."

"Right," said Naruto. "Fabber can automatically form Fab-1, which makes parts like I use to put together Tenten's limbs."

"Yes," said Ibiki, "and Fab-2 is the one you're building now, which will allow you to build bigger parts."

"Yeah, though Fabber here will be able to access it from anywhere, Fab-2 will remain where it is," said Naruto. "So what part don't you understand?"

"What is Fabber?" asked Ibiki.

"Huh," said Naruto, stopping what he was doing in order to consider that question.

[Suggest holographic chamber be constructed before explanation given. Lack of technological expertise may be overcome by visual examples.]

"Yeah, that might work," said Naruto. "Ibiki-sensei? Let me get the Fab-2 working, then I can put together something that'll help explain it."

"Oh?" asked Ibiki, more interested now that some of the unexplainable stood a chance of being explained.

It took two hours to put together the basic framework, make the connections, and get Fab-2 operational.

While things were going on, Naruto's shadow clones would go about in the background putting things together to reinforce and plate together the new exterior for the shed.

When the Hokage arrived with two ANBU and Anko Mitarashi, it was to find that a circular platform with a tube over it had been hooked up to the outside of the shed.

"And... power up," said Naruto, hitting a switch on the side. The clear tube turned blue, flickered, and then displayed something.

[Greetings, honored guests. I am Fabrication Unit 301-A, registered to Naruto Uzumaki.]

"Uhm, okay, I just wanted to know if I could get..." said Anko, clearly confused.

The Hokage held up a hand. "You are one of these 'Artificial Intelligences' like Multi and Mahoro, correct?"

[Yes,] said the device, displaying Konoha, shrinking Konoha to show a world. Then flicking to another world with a different sun, and a large set of odd devices fit together. [This is what I look like, and where I am. Fab-1 and Fab-2 are interface ports for the disassembly and reassembly of matter from your universe.]

"Wait a minute," said Anko. "So the Naruto loading those bricks of material into that shed is...?"

[Providing raw material that can be disassembled. Weapon-grade steel can be further modified into a variety of subtypes of steel and combined with other molecules for differing results. Yugao's sword for example.]

"What about Yugao's sword?" asked Anko.

[Vibro-sword. Normal weapon-grade steel would shatter. Materials had to be upgraded.]

"The sword vibrates?" asked Anko.

"She doesn't use it often, apparently some of the more sensitive of the Inuzuka clan's hounds find the sound to be quite unpleasant," said Ibiki, familiar with the thing. "I think Hayate's got it now, he's outside the village on a mission."

Anko fidgeted.

"Uhm, your companion unit has to be approved by Ibiki-sensei or Ji... the Hokage," said Naruto, getting a too-familiar glare from Ibiki as he nearly used a familiar address. The things he had to do in order to get to play with the cool toys.

"An acid-spitting flying snake," said Ibiki, eyeing Anko. "Anyone vote for her to have one?"

Anko raised her hand.

"Anyone think that would be a disaster waiting to happen?" asked Ibiki, raising his own hand.

Hands started popping up from the attending ANBU, including one that was hiding in the shrubbery.

Anko went to sulking. Okay, maybe her reputation had some bad points as well as good ones.

"So what kind of things can you build now?" asked the Hokage, looking at what the Naruto shadow clones were assembling.

Naruto grinned. This was what he jumped through the various hoops for, to build and use the Cool Stuff.
