The best water mages for healing also had to learn about the way a human body operated in order to use specific spells or to carefully direct healing. It was a highly specialized field of magical study requiring precise control more than simply throwing a lot of power at the patient.
"Phillipe?" asked one of the medics as she came in for her shift. "This is the familiar of that Valliere?"
"Yes," said Phillipe, looking more exhausted than Andrea had ever seen him. "Stabilized for the moment. Don't use the simpler workings though, it's as if the body doesn't know how to heal itself."
"That's pretty bad," admitted Andrea. "But stable for the moment?"
"Yes," said Phillipe. "I think it might have just been a side-effect of that botched summoning. That was a level of physical shock I've never seen. Not even in the worst of battles that I've patched up after - most people I've met would have died from that even if the wounds were otherwise minor."
"So, perhaps a commoner but certainly uncommon as well?" asked Andrea.
"That is true," admitted Phillipe. "You might gather your things and resupply before relieving me for shift-change. Though stable for the moment, this familiar is not quite out of the woods yet."
She was normally looked down upon and insulted as "Louise the Zero" - but there were worse fates.
"Well, cheer up, Louise, at least you got something," said a busty redhead as she grabbed the depressed midget and pulled her into a sort of marshmallow hell.
"MFFFF!" said Louise as she realized she couldn't breathe.
"Though rivals," said Kirche, ignoring the way Louise's arms were waving frantically back and forth, "it pains me to see you drifting around in depression. Come back to the world of light, Louise!"
"MRGPH!" managed Louise.
"I think she's about to go into the light," said Tabitha softly, looking at the scene and if she was glad it wasn't her - wasn't admitting that part.
"See? Even Tabitha is quite concerned for you," continued Kirche.
"UNF," managed Louise before going completely limp.
"Hmmm?" asked Kirche, releasing Louise only to find that the girl was still being held upright by dint of cleavage. Finally she grabbed Louise and pried her face out. "Louise? Why are you blue?"
"Healer," said Tabitha.
"Right, she ought to be looked at," agreed Kirche. "Fainting like that, I had no idea she was so affected by this ordeal."
Finally the familiar stirred, making a pained noise as it did so.
The smell of antiseptic, the clean linen, the smell of old blood and pain that somehow lingered from previous occupants. All these assaulted the patient as wakefulness slowly replaced the more comatose behavior.
