As they were now in a warmer clime than Konoha anyway, a change of outfit also had the benefit of further distancing Naruto from Naruko if someone was looking for a beacon of orange.
So the outfit still included orange. More of it was dark black or blue. Vest, tee shirt, shorts, bracers, leggings. Instead of Konoha's typical sandals, some of the local footwear had been substituted.
Naruko slapped at a bug that had landed on her arm.
"Well, now, this might work," said Jiraiya as he studied a sign.
"Eh?" asked Naruko. "What's that?"
"Just remember, you're 'Naruko' and I'm 'Jeri'," said Jiraiya, using a quick henge to change his clothing. Now he was wearing a loose-fitting outfit similar to what Teuchi at Ichiraku's would wear.
"What are you doing?" asked Naruko as Jeri went off on a side path.
"This area gets heavy frequent rains," said Jeri. "Look to the sides of the road. See how large the drainage ditches are?"
"Uhm, yeah," said Naruko, glancing at them now.
"Not a lot of big trees though, mainly farmland, right?" asked Jeri.
"Well, yeah," admitted Naruko, now that someone was pointing it out - it DID look a lot different from the Land Of Fire.
"Roads get pretty muddy," said Jeri. "Locals use the large canals to travel larger distances - the roads are mainly for local use."
Naruko looked around, seeing some distant farmers working in the fields, then hurried to catch up with Jeri/Jiraiya.
"You notice they have small fish in the rice fields," said Jeri, going to the edge of one field and pointing. "The fish help fertilize these little ponds and eat bugs. Notice how some of the fields are drained? Crop rotation keeps the soil from depleting."
"How do you know all this?" asked Naruko, thinking that this seemed like strange stuff for a ninja and pervert-writer to know.
"Not all ninja concentrate exclusively on combat talents, and a writer must know many things," said Jeri, straightening up again. "If you ever went on an infiltration mission, knowing something about farming would help a lot."
"I suppose," said Naruko.
"As to where we're going now," said Jeri, eyeing the sky. "We're heading for one of the local docks where we'll hitch a ride away from Konmei. There's a place I've heard of but haven't been to that might be worth a visit."
