Jiraiya inspected the blade without directly touching it. Magic weapons that chose their owner were extremely rare but there were stories about them. Some of those stories had nasty things happen if someone other than the owner decided to handle them. Jiraiya was not anxious to test the theory, though at some point he expected he'd have to.
"Similar to some of the old designs for swords I've seen, blade is double-edged and about a meter long, metal is... unfamiliar. Hilt of an unknown material, black and kind of dull looking. Looks very sharp."
Naruto waited patiently, standing nearby and turning the blade every so often when directed by Jiraiya.
"The design in white on the pommel is of a hollow circle," said Jiraiya, stepping back and looking very thoughtful. "Which can mean a LOT of different things."
"Like what?" asked Naruto, who didn't want the thing if it meant something really horrible like no ramen.
"Zero, null, void, the absence of anything," began Jiraiya, counting things off on his fingers. "Cycles like reincarnation or the 'circle of life' stuff. It could also mean stability, as a circle has no single weak point. It could mean the letter in the ancient language on some buildings of 'O' in which case it could mean even more things. It could even refer to something traditionally round like the moon or a mirror."
"Or a bowl of ramen?" asked Naruto, thinking that a sword that let him find ramen would be really cool.
Finally Jiraiya sighed and reached out carefully with one finger extended to touch the blade, ready to leap back at the first sign of anything happening. Then he visibly reconsidered and moved his hand closer to the grip.
"I thought you weren't going to touch it cause something bad might happen," noted Naruto as Jiraiya tried to stretch out.
"Better we know now, rather than have me accidentally come into contact with it when something dangerous is going on," said Jiraiya as he stretched the last little bit to make contact with his pinky and the hilt of the sword.
Nothing happened.
Jiraiya sagged, his hand dropping away. Naruto let out a breath he hadn't been aware he'd been holding.
Jiraiya then tried doing it again, this time touching the blade itself.
