"What's that, Pervy-sage?" asked Naruto.
"The iStaff," said Jiraiya absently. "A six ringed khakkhara-style staff with abilities related to the gathering of information. The six rings symbolize the Six Perfections of the Monk's path, as well as the six methods of gathering information available to the staff-wielder."
"I don't suppose that tells you what this is," said Naruto, sounding a bit skeptical.
"Dyrnwyn," said Jiraiya, staring at the blade a moment before answering. "So long as it is wielded in noble cause, it will burn the enemies of its wielder. If it is used for unjust purposes, it will burn the wielder."
Naruto blinked. "Uhm."
"So I know a few things about sword-training, even though I'm not a specialist at it," said Jiraiya. "We'll add that to your lessons. Which will be good."
"Why? Not that I'm objecting to learning to use a sword," said Naruto. "I mean, I'm a ninja and we use kunai and shuriken more than swords."
"And there's a reason right there," said Jiraiya with an easy grin. "You'll be a young ronin and I'm a traveling monk now. If Akatsuki is looking for two ninja, then a monk and a swordsman are a little less suspicious."
"I suppose," said Naruto, plopping down next to the campfire the sage had built from dried driftwood. "That stuff stinks."
"So it's a little pungent. It's what's available," pointed out Jiraiya.
"I don't know about being a 'ronin' though," noted Naruto. "I don't know anything about samurai."
"All the more reason," said Jiraiya. "You think that's bad? I'm going to be trying to act in accordance with the Six Perfections. Not an easy task for someone who is not exactly a priest. Though I figure if I step out of character I can always point to it and say that's why I'm out wandering instead of in some monastery."
Naruto was silent for a bit, thinking about this new development.
"Well, I'm going to go gather more wood and then try to do some fishing," said Jiraiya, getting up. "I'll show you basic stances later. When we get back off the island, we'll check around for a change of clothing."
