Picking it up revealed that it felt heavy at first but soon seemed to lighten considerably with a feeling of renewed strength flooding into him.
"Huh," said Naruto as he considered the thing.
"Interesting," said Jiraiya after considering the thing. "Well, I know a little about wielding such a weapon - but it's not something I'm very practiced at. Tsunade had one of those briefly."
"Really?" asked Naruto, though when he thought about it could somehow picture their current Hokage using such a weapon.
"Yeah, during the war, sometimes we had to use whatever we found on the battlefield," said Jiraiya. "She lost it during the fight with Hanzo the Salamander - an acid spray that she blocked with it. Saved her face but pretty much dissolved the weapon."
"Oh," said Naruto. "So you know enough to get me started on it?"
"That much I can do," admitted Jiraiya. "Any idea what the special properties of this are? If it was HERE, it's a sure bet that it has something going for it."
"Not really, it feels real heavy when I pick it up, but then it gets lighter," said Naruto.
"Let me see," said Jiraiya, holding out a hand.
Naruto stared as he handed off the hammer, and as soon as it left his hand caused Jiraiya to drop it. When it hit the ground he could feel the impact roll through the rock at his feet.
"Okay, variable weight," said Jiraiya, trying to budge it. "It accepts you, so it weighs less in your hands. It rejects me, so it weighs a lot. Definite uses for that. Put it on an enemy's chest and you might crush them."
"Be kinda messy," noted Naruto.
"Pick it up again," directed Jiraiya, studying Naruto as the genin did so. "Hmmm. Something about you changes, but I'm having trouble figuring out what exactly it is."
"Oh?" asked Naruto, checking himself over.
"Whatever it changes makes you seem more mature or dependable or something," said Jiraiya, intrigued by both the effect and his inability to pin down exactly what changed. Something to research later.
"So... nothing bad?" asked Naruto.
"No, actually good," said Jiraiya with a nod. "I think I'll take a look around and see if anything responds to me."
