"Arf!"
"You said it, Akamaru. We could at least be getting some training in if this was outside."
"Hnn," indicated Sasuke.
"Yeah, I suppose," said Kiba. "So, you know fire techniques?"
"Hnn?" asked Sasuke.
"You're an Uchiha, that and that Sharingan are kinda your clan specialties," said Kiba, jerking a thumb at himself at the end. "Just like my clan has specialty techniques."
"Arf?"
"Hmf," snorted Sasuke.
"Hey, all I'm saying is we could be more productive outside of a stuffy old classroom." Kiba shrugged.
"Hhm?" asked Sasuke.
"Hana pulls a lot of all-nighters and such," explained Kiba. "She ends up doing a lot of that until she's had at least two cups of tea."
"Hnf," indicated Sasuke, nodding. Yeah, he could see how that would be the case.
Team 10:
"Troublesome," said Shikamaru.
"No kidding," responded Choji.
"No sense of fashion at all," said Ino.
"Aw, don't be like that," said Anko Mitarashi. "You might hurt my feelings or something."
"I have a feeling that would be extremely troublesome," said Shikamaru, eyeing the way their sensei was licking the edge of some long knife.
"No kidding," agreed Choji nervously.
"Aw, you two are wimps," said Ino. "This'll be easy!"
Team 8:
Hinata winced.
Shino looked inscrutable.
Boro frowned.
"So," said Asuma Sarutobi. "Anyone want to try taking these?"
"Two bells, three of us," said Boro, pulling off his bandana and flicking it. The piece of cloth went straight and stiff in his hands. "So - someone fails no matter what?"
"What do you think?" asked Asuma.
"So, I get an ANBU instructor?" asked Naruto. "Cool. Do I get a mask and codename?"
"Yes, and no, in that order," said Iruka. He looked off to the side abruptly.
"Was that a scream?" asked Naruto.
"A sound of innocence lost, of horror and terror, and ending in what sounded like soul-crushing despair," said Iruka.
Naruto thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. That sounded like Ino."
"Well, there was some shuffling of team assignments at the last minute," admitted Iruka. "Anko was pretty happy to get that, said that she wasn't going to let the Hokage down."
"'Anko'? Wasn't that the name of the jonin for Team 10?" asked Naruto, revealing that he HAD been paying attention.
"Yes, and she probably has gotten Anko's personal attention," said Iruka. "Well, it'll be interesting to see how she develops in those circumstances."
"So who is my sensei?" asked Naruto.
earlier:
There were several ANBU offering to become a sensei for Naruto Uzumaki, to make the most of the new resources he was bringing to bear. Once word had gotten out amongst the ANBU that the Hokage wanted someone to volunteer to train Naruto.
Not all were suitable for one reason or another.
Hiruzen Sarutobi considered the files of the applicants carefully.
Cat was considered briefly but her skillset was ideal for border patrol and police duties inside the village. If she were to train Naruto - he'd learn sword skills and stealth. While both skillsets were handy, that wasn't quite Naruto's style.
Falcon was all about speed. Reflexes, movement, avoidance. Falcon was also highly skilled in taijutsu, with speed-based techniques primarily and augmented by wind-element jutsu. He was a little bit nuts and overly flamboyant though. Not quite to Gai's extent, but still...
Tiger was someone whose loyalty he wasn't completely clear on. Tough, strong, but a bit too cold and serious - probably not a good match for Naruto.
Porcupine - no. Just no.
Mantis? The Hokage considered what he knew of her, then refreshed his memory by flipping through the file. Skilled in most everything one would expect, though she really shone in taijutsu and wielding those twin kama. Only problems in her file were that incident in Iwa, and she'd kept away from alcohol since then. Oh, and that time she had fought Kumo's Yugito Ni and it had only been because the Kumo-nin had stopped pursuit had allowed Mantis to survive. Still had a bit of a limp when she wasn't enhancing that limb with chakra.
That was two possibles with Mantis and Falcon, then the next one brought a raised eyebrow to Hiruzen's face.
"Death Orchid? She's retired," noted Hiruzen Sarutobi. "Did this end up on my desk by mistake?"
The chunin acting as secretary looked back from his desk. "No sir. She showed up and added her file just as I was getting up to bring the files in. She seemed a bit old though."
"You don't know of her record?" asked Hiruzen Sarutobi, sounding amused. "Death Orchid. Sometimes called 'Black Orchid' or 'Black Death Orchid'? She's just a decade or so behind my own age."
"Something special about her?" asked the young chunin, curious.
"She's easily on a level with Danzo or either of my old team," said Hiruzen Sarutobi. "She was one of the few who could give the Sannin a hard time."
"Oh?" asked the chunin absently.
"She used to scare the piss out of Orochimaru," supplied the Hokage.
"Oh. Shit," summed up the chunin.
"I thought she was dying and never left her house, had her grandson do all the running around for her," mused the Hokage, adding this file to the potential sensei candidates. She might not have much life left - but if SHE took over training Naruto then the boy would either end up quitting or becoming hell-on-two-feet in short order.
Tenzo's file was next. Another distinct possibility with his talents and ability to subdue the Kyubi if that became a problem.
Baku was considered and then rejected. While his sensory abilities were quite high, his skillset was best utilized in his usual fast-response capacity within the village.
The next file down was NOT in ANBU but had apparently gotten word of the possibilities Naruto was bringing to the table.
Tokuma Hyuga? ANBU Parakeet, who'd LOATHED that codename, until he'd retired for not being a particularly good fit for the duties. And a skin allergy to the coating on his mask. Certainly skilled enough as a sensor. A possibility.
Finally though, the Hokage chose to make Naruto's sensei:
