"Hmmm," said Igor, going over the chart. "Yes, I remember. I was the assistant for Haruno-san."
"Oh? Not '404'?" asked Kakashi.
"She's stable so far, so I don't really feel the need for emotional distance. Besides, I remember everyone's names. I used to be a lab experiment myself." Igor looked over the chart, checked the various intravenous drips, then back to the vitals. "Yes. She's doing very well actually."
"Really?" asked Kakashi, looking over the sleeping girl.
"These are my notes," said Igor, flipping back to a section in the chart. "Initial antibiotic dosing done at 0400. Surgical prep at 0500 and she was knocked out at that time. 0600 - the initial injections were made. She was quite unconscious by that time of course. Injecting substances into the long bones is very painful. A slight rash on two of the injector sites was dealt with by topical solutions. Blood transfusion with appropriate genetic markers at 0900. There was a definite reaction at 1013, nearly lost her at that point. We were able to stabilize that by 1017. Had to cool her body down at 1117 when the viral effects started going. Continued to keep her cooled down but there hasn't been any major changes since 0400 this morning when she manifested and we knew we had a success. At that time she went to monitoring and there was no need to continue the cooling process as her life signs went back to normal values."
"Excuse me," said Naruto. "I'm not a ninja. Just a sword priest and monster hunter. What exactly was done to her?"
"Oh. Do you know what a kekkei genkai is?" asked Igor.
"Not really," said Naruto.
"Okay, well there's several types of kekkei genkai," said Igor, thinking for a moment. "Some have obvious physical traits like the Sharingan eye of the Uchiha clan or the Byakugan of the Hyuga. Some are less obvious but genetically passed on traits. The Nara clan, for example, normally have high intelligence and are naturally inclined towards their clan techniques regarding shadow manipulation. Even when a Sharingan wielder copies their clan techniques - it costs more in terms of chakra to wield them than a Nara would require. Or the stamina and longevity of the Uzumaki clan. And so on. There are also bloodline abilities where two chakra natures can be blended to produce something different - a merged element that can't be duplicated by someone without that special bloodline. Our esteemed First Hokage had Wood Element after all - mixing Earth and Water to produce Wood. Very useful."
"So this treatment was to try and give Sakura a bloodline ability like those?" asked Naruto.
"Yes, exactly," agreed Igor. "We have several samples of such things as that was one of Orochimaru's major projects. And now we have a success with a bloodline that was extinct or nearly so ready to make a comeback. Though she's only twelve. It will be quite some time before we can determine if she can pass that bloodline on."
"I would hope so," said Kakashi.
"We're not Kumo after all," said Igor. "We've all heard of their forced breeding of kidnapped bloodlines."
"Certainly not," said Kakashi. If only in little ways like that - Konoha remained the "nice ninja" village in comparison to certain others. "So she manifested?"
"Yes," said Igor.
