One moment he was lying down in a ruined temple. The next moment he was looking around him in a very different place.
"How the heck did I get here?" asked Naruto, not expecting an answer.
"Through the intervention of a third party I expect."
"Who? What? Where? A ghost?" asked Naruto, looking around himself.
"Not quite a ghost. Not yet. I should be dead but apparently a spark of life remains. I see. You wear a mask in the real world that brought you to me in this unreal worldlet. Well met, traveler."
"Where are you?" asked Naruto, still not seeing anything.
"I mean you no harm, child. Might you stay awhile though? I find the thought of dying alone to be unpleasant."
Naruto felt that touch and realized all he had to do was lift his hands and remove the mask. Still, the voice sounded sad and lonely rather than menacing or scary. "Uhm. Okay."
"Good. I see you bear the mark of destiny upon you. If you survive the trials ahead, you may become a great hero. For whatever it is worth, I wish you luck on that."
"Ah, right," said Naruto, deciding that the statue was the source of the voice. He slowly began approaching it to get a better look. "Who are you anyway?"
"Ah. You are from far away. I am of a place known by many names, and my most commonly given name there was:"
