At the head table, on its raised platform, one of the teachers snorted at some private joke or recollection.
"Here at Konoha we have been using the same method since 1412," continued Shizune. "The Orb Of Choosing."
"It's a cauldron with little slips of paper in it," said Kiba. "Really? 'Orb Of Choosing'?"
"If you're so confident, Inuzuka-san, perhaps you should go first?" asked Shizune.
"Heck no," said Kiba, shaking his head. "That's one of the things my big sister told me for years. Never volunteer. Man, some of the horror stories she told me..."
"Go ahead, Mister Inuzuka," said Shizune. "I can see we're going to be seeing a lot of you in the coming years."
"Oh," said Kiba, realizing that the suggestion hadn't actually been a suggestion or question. He gathered his confidence back up, strode proudly forward and put his hand into the cauldron. He grabbed a slip, held it up, and read it. "'Inuzuka. Easy one. Loyalty to friends and members of your pack. Byakko.'"
"The White Tiger of the West, guardian of home and hearth," said Shizune approvingly.
"Yeah," said Kiba. "Byakko. Fierce guardian. That's got me written all over it."
"Next," said Shizune. "Sasuke Uchiha, I presume."
Striding proudly forward, Sasuke Uchiha would NOT be in some Inuzuka's shadow. He snatched a paper and read from it. "'As expected from an Uchiha. Suzaku of Fire, Pride, and Will. Perhaps you might yet redeem your House.' What's that supposed to mean?"
"Suzaku was founded by Ashiya who often fought with Abe No Seimei, the founder of Seiryu. The two Houses have often conflicted," said Shizune. "There are other possible interpretations, but those will either come to you or not - that's up to you. Next - Shikamaru Nara."
"What a pain," said Shikamaru, grabbing one. "Genbu. It figures. 'I know it's a pain, but you fit Genbu best. Try not to slouch so much.' Ugh, troublesome."
"The House of Genbu," said Shizune, continuing to explain each House as it came up. "The turtle and the snake of the North. Strength of the Earth, stability is something they all treasure. Many first-class medics, merchants, and martial artists have come from Genbu."
The line slowly moved, each child going up and pulling one slip of paper - which dissolved into flecks of light after being read. Those flecks were of different colors, further signifying the House of the child. White was Byakko. Red for Suzaku. The flecks of light were green for Seiryu and a dark charcoal color for Genbu.
Choji Akimichi ended up with Shikamaru Nara in Genbu. Ino Yamanaka exclaimed her disappointment in not ending up in Suzaku but instead in Genbu herself.
"Ah, Seiryu," said Shizune after a girl named Ami was sorted into it. "The dragon of the East, those who prize intellect and information fit into that House. Some of the most powerful wizards and healers got their start there. Next - Naruto Uzumaki."
There was a lot of whispering among the children at that name, and as the whiskered blond made his way up to the cauldron and drew a slip that stated his House was:
