She walked into the clan compound without any of her usual hesitance or slouching. Since she was "off" in those regards, the guards had responded by flashing their Byakugan to determine if this was actually someone using a disguise jutsu.
The startled noises and frantic rubbing of eyes was something that perhaps could have been expected by Hinata, though she genuinely hadn't thought of this ahead of time.
The one she DID anticipate though, showed up. Her father. Who apparently had been told that something was amiss with her.
She'd faced several supervillains in her time with Team 7 in that Other World. While inside she might have quailed just a bit, she kept that hidden.
"Father," acknowledged Hinata.
Hiashi's eyes narrowed as he looked her over. Finally he spoke. "Explain."
"This is ranked an S-Class secret by the Hokage himself, the short version is a space-time jutsu malfunctioning. As this is an S-Class secret - I will give you a further report in private under sealed conditions."
Hiashi nodded. "Follow."
Present:
Her clan knew what was going on only in the most broad terms of the cover story, which was simply the truth with a number of omissions. Space/time jutsu imploding. More time passing for her than the rest of the village.
She knew what she looked like to the Byakugan. She, Sakura, and Sasuke would all had something that looked like a heat-shimmer, such as would occur on some roofs on a hot summer day.
Though she was looking forward to the first time that Naruto-kun would visit the compound. His was not a heat-shimmer. He was the sun itself and the roiling air of an active forge surrounded by fireworks.
"Kiba-kun, Shino-kun," said Hinata as she took her place. They still didn't know details either. Though they knew something at least. Shino had reported to her, an eyebrow raised above his glasses, that he had tagged her after team sorting and had gotten back a kikai insect that was older and had an especially tough shell and enhanced sensory capabilities.
The explanation that it was a space/time jutsu malfunction and an S-Class secret had been accepted without further comment but she could feel his stare at several points of the day.
"Hinata-san," said Shino this morning. "The altered kikai is currently being bred."
"That's good, I suppose," responded Hinata.
"Considering it was a drone and without gender, this is also a bit of a surprise," stated Shino.
"I suppose it would be," admitted Hinata.
"'Space time jutsu gone wrong'?" asked Kiba, clearly suspicious that there was a lot more to the story himself.
"Until the Hokage gives the okay, I can't really say more than that," said Hinata. "Kurenai-sensei, good morning."
Kiba sniffed the air. Shino let out a little sigh.
Kurenai Yuhi appeared in a swirl of leaves, frowning slightly at Hinata.
"Do we have a good mission today?" asked Hinata brightly.
"No mask?" asked Naruto.
The ANBU shook her head. "Not needed for this mission."
"Oh," said Naruto. "What's the mission?"
The ANBU removed her mask. "Undercover. C-Rank. Travel to border town. You are my nephew Nakaru. I am an expert at tea ceremony named Hitomi. Other details classified for now."
"Oh. Okay," said Naruto. "Nakaru?"
"Something sounding close to your real name will help cover if someone calls out that name and you react to it." The ANBU shook her head. "ANBU might have Ansatsu (assassination) in the name, but not all duties carried out by ANBU involve killing. This is one such duty. You'll see."
