Master PC for Idiots: GIGO (Command Line pitfalls) [Episode 27568]

by S/Rohm

Nodoka spent a few minutes considering what changes she wanted to make to Kodachi’s file.

Shampoo and Ukyo would make enthusiastic mistresses, but Nodoka thought her manly son needed something special.  While eagerness had its good points, sometimes a man preferred a more skillful, dignified approach.  Kodachi could fill that role. She just needed a few skills and to accept that she would be a mistress, not a wife.

Kodachi will willingly become Ranma’s mistress.  She will have the knowledge and abilities needed to be a proper, skillful mistress.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Master PC program was amazingly sophisticated, but it had its limits.  As a (very large, very prominent) WARNING in it’s Help file clearly stated, it was best to stick with the menus and drop-down boxes whenever possible.  The command line interface should only be used as a last resort.

This was due to the limits of the natural language parser.  The menu selections were well defined.  When one was selected, the Master PC knew exactly what was desired, and exactly what changes to make to bring about those results.  With the command line, the program had to use it’s parser to determine the meaning of the command and then determine on its own exactly what changes were necessary to achieve that result.  Its sophistication was such that the vast majority of the time it got things right, but errors were definitely possible.

(Luckily, Nodoka had a normal copy of the Master PC, not one of the demonic versions that were in circulation.  Those actively worked at misinterpreting the user’s commands.)

The program Nodoka was using didn’t deliberately try to misinterpret her command, but like any computer program it was subject to the GIGO principle (Garbage In, Garbage Out).  What you got out depended on what you put in, and computer programmers everywhere could tell you the hazards of not specifying exactly what you wanted.  In some ways, the Master PC’s sophistication only made things worse.  Once it made a faulty assumption, errors could multiply as it used that assumption as a basis for making future decisions.

When Nodoka entered her command, the program matched the words with the ones in its internal dictionary.  A few came up with multiple definitions, but a basic logic subroutine was all it took to sort through most of them.  One term, however, seemed to have two potentially valid definitions.  This was flagged and brought to the attention of a more sophisticated logic program.  This program looked over the command and determined that nothing existed that would help determine which definition was correct.  Since either one seemed equally valid, it picked the definition that most closely matched the subject’s current mental profile.

Which is why Nodoka’s command brought about some very unintended changes.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The St. Hebereke gymnasts team shuddered as they changed back to their school clothes.  Kodachi had always been loony, but today was something else.  Today had been downright scary.

They had just completed a match against another school.  Actually, Kodachi had just completed the match.  Kodachi had defeated the entire opposing team in record time.  What had her fellow gymnasts worried was how she had done it.  Kodachi hadn’t resorted to any of her extensive array of dirty tricks.  Instead, she had cut loose with an intensity they had never seen before.  She hadn’t just won her matches, she had completely dominated her opponents.  Just remembering some of the moves Kodachi had used made most of them wince.

The way Kodachi had been looking at them and fingering her ribbon when she reminded the team of tomorrow’s practice was also a cause for concern.  Most of the girls wondered if it was too late to take up another sport.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Kodachi sighed as she stepped into the hot shower.  Today had been just what she had needed to work off her frustrations.  Why had she been sabotaging these matches?  Nothing could match the thrill had she felt when her opponent was helpless at her feet!

True, she preferred boys, one in particular, but girls would be an adequate substitute until she managed to get her Ranma-sama.  He had managed to lead her on a delightful chase so far, but she had plans…

Hmm.  Speaking of girls, it would be most satisfying to teach those low-born tramps pursuing her Ranma what their proper place was in life.  Especially that red-haired hussy.  They needed to learn just who was the Mistress around here.
