Kaori sighed as the door splintered into pieces when she tried to push it open, revealing the frozen over, and empty, room beyond. She just felt lucky that the chill had reduced enough that her hand hadn't frozen to the door knob.
She shook her head and turned back away from her daughter's frozen room. She came into the front room and shrugged her shoulders in defeat.
"They've come and gone," Kaori said.
"I did warn you both," Grandfather Hino said with a smile. "You should have been more up front with your children."
"If she can rebel against me," Millenia said, shrugging himself. "She can rebel against her father, so I'm fine with this."
"You would be," Kaori said. "Me, I didn't even really believe what you suggested until I walked into that room just now. It was a woman for goodness sakes, how does a woman get another woman pregnant?"
"You're very good at that science of yours, Kaori," Millenia said. "But not all darkstalkers fit biology lessons as easily as Tengu, even corrupted ones, do. So, I suspect you have a reason to be calling all of us together again, Gramps, what is it?"
"Need you ask?" Hino asked. "My granddaughter, both of your daughters, and their friend, Usagi, have had before now dormant Darkstalker blood spring into life. One of those girls was of a blood noble enough to warrant having an ifrit prince set to guard her. If the circle were complete..." he paused a moment to mourn his daughter and her husband. "...we might have more information. But, as it is, we have to guess. In any case, the Dark will be on the move again."
"And, what do we do about it?" Kaori asked. "We're all a little old to be strapping on the old proton packs and go off hunting demons and ghosts."
"I hate to admit it," Millenia said. "But she's right, I'm aging as a mortal ages, Gramps. And the years have treated me kindly by those considerations, but I'm hardly up to combat snuff."
"We'll do whatever we need to do," the old man said. "But in the time to come I severely doubt that the Dark will stay in the shadows for much longer, we may find students to do what we no longer can."
"In the meantime," Kaori said. "I think it's time I started making calls to some of Ami's other friends, in case she decides to speak to them."
"That is a good idea," Grandfather Hino said. "Rei did say she knew of at least eight other dormant darkstalkers beside herself."
