A short while later, Belldandy was chatting pleasantly with Mara. Like the last time Mara lost her memory, she turned out to be a very pleasant person when not trying to find ways to damn peoples' souls to hell. Megumi, upon realizing that Urd WASN'T joking about being Goddesses, had fainted.
While that happened, a concerned Urd was watching Skuld communicate with Yggdrasil through her computer. Keiichi was with them for a lack of anything else to do... what with Megumi unconscious and he still feeling uncomfortable around Mara...
"How could something like this happen?" Skuld mumbled as she tried to establish contact. She wasn't too surprised it was going slow - anything that could do something like this probably caused no end of havoc in communication lines.
"It's theoretically possible," Urd said over her shoulder. "If Mara was forced to absorb Holy Energy, then that would diminish her own infernal energy. If she actually absorbed so much Holy Energy that she lost all her Infernal Energy, her body would compensate by shifting to a form that didn't need such energy. To wit: Mara, or any demon, would became a mortal."
"But what about my sister?" Keiichi asked."
Urd turned to face him. "Same principle, only without Infernal Energy to counteract it, she would adapt to become something that could handle the energy - a spirit or goddess. Of course, in this case, Mara was a first class demon. The sheer amount of Holy Energy required to change her like that is immeasurable. Even if my sisters and I pooled our power together to do it, I doubt we could. Not without probably killing at least one of us to do so. And even then, we couldn't release the energy fast enough to do the job before Mara could protect herself." Urd shook her head. "If that IS what happened, then it's no wonder Megumi went right to being a Goddess. Even not at the epicenter, it was probably enough to force her to become at least a third class goddess to survive. But that's not what I am worried most about."
This got the attention of both Skuld and Keiichi.
"If Mara's become human, that means that whoever her counterpart in the doublet system is has probably ALSO become human as a result. Furthermore, with Megumi's ascension, that means that another mortal will soon - if its not already been done - be converted to a demon to maintain the balance. Depending on what happens in both cases, the Heavens could be in total chaos over this... and Hell has gotten a new ally. Anyway you look at it, they win this round."
Skuld audibly swallowed, then got back to work. They NEEDED to figure out what was going on, and they needed it now.
