Ranma shook his head. Ash was apparently just as friendly as could be, but an idiot and obsessed with Magibeasts.
Magibeasts (using a different name to further differentiate between cockfighting plush-toys) had been a result of the German government in 1990 experimenting with high energy physics and inadvertantly opening something called a Worldgate.
The problem with this was that nobody was quite prepared for what came pouring out. Magic. Raw magic. Which bonded with biological systems. While humans often just developed odd talents or turned into furries (type depending on something to do with self-image apparently), it was the effect on animals that truly altered the way the world worked.
Monsters. Demons. Creatures who were magical in nature and had a lot of attitude. There was a lot of death and destruction at first, then someone figured out that if you raised one of these things as a pet - domesticated it or just had one where it got used to having people around, they were smart and friendly beasties who could be quite useful.
Now the year was 2015, twenty years since the initial release of magical force.
Ranma went through another set of kata, trying to get this body into shape, as he remembered.
Magibeasts couldn't be handled by just anyone, but he (as Ash) had made the grade at an early age. Now it was time for him to get his first Magibeast and that would likely determine his career track.
Elemental beasts (air, earth, fire, water, light or spirit, dark, wood) often suggested a career for their handler based on their element. Water, for example, could mean working for the Coast Guard, the Fire Department, or something similar. Fire element could end up using their resistance to heat and fire in rescue operations or in a combat role. And so on.
Martial artists on the street or the television circuit, routinely fought alongside their Magibeasts to the thrill of the crowds and for large sums of money. Also the occasional product endorsement.
There were other roles/careers of course. "Ash" could remember hearing about Doggons (dragons about the size of a Saint Bernard, a large Saint Bernard) being trained for search and rescue, or the handlers of Pegasi being employed by the Civilian Air Patrol.
So Ranma/Ash got to Professor Oak's place with all due speed only to find he was going to be the proud handler of a:
