"Ah wait, something else." Herid Fel said, turning back to his bookshelf.
Rand paused and looked back at the old scholar.
"It's only a fragment, but that comment of your earlier made me think of it. . ." Herid commented as he pulled out a book and flipped through it.
"What comment? Is this about. . ."
"No, no, it's about lives." Looking at the page he had opened the book to, he nodded and handed it to Rand. "According to this scrap, there were once some who learned to delve into the memories of the lives they had been reborn from. This is a fragment of the technique they used, but the description is incomplete."
Rand grabbed the book and read the page indicated, Lews Therins rants echoing in his mind. As he finished reading through the information a second time, he frowned. 'Incomplete, just like he said. Still. . .'
Rand lay back, thinking of the strange fragments of a strange art. Sighing he shook his head and closed his eyes, weaving wards of Saidin around his dreams. Then he paused with the wards half complete. 'Something in the way the wards are woven. . .' Holding the weaving half finished, he remembered the scraps of information. Then wove a different pattern to finish the wards, while mixing the breathing described with his long practice with the flame and the void.
Rand blinked and looked around himself. He seemed to be in some sort of hallway. Turning he looked at a pedestal with a statue of himself on it. Feeling curious he extended a hand. . .
Just born he was lying on the hard ground, crying as loud as he could. Hands reached down to him, hands that were attached to a face that even younger and larger was clearly the face of Tam AlThor.
Rand pulled his hand back, and stepped back from the alcove. 'Memories. . .' he thought, considering the statue. "Memories of. . ." Turning to one side, he looked at another statue, knowing as he looked that it was Lews Therin. Then he turned again, and looked at the hall, which stretched seemingly without end, alcoves dotting its length. "How many lives?. . ."
He ran forward, looking to see if an end would appear. After a few minutes of running, he came to a halt, staring down the still unending hallway. Then he looked at the alcove beside him.
Blinking in surprise he reached out his hand before he realized what he was doing.
