Rand and Mat ran through the forest as fast as they could, the Trollocs howls driving them on. They had been lucky in spotting the creatures in time to flee the road, but there were Trollocs who could track by smell, and they were closing in on them.
"We just have to find someplace where they can't get at our backs or sides." Mat commented, his hand dropping to caress the golden dagger on his belt.
Rand slowed a moment, looking ahead. "There." He commented accelerating toward an oddly shaped hill. Running between the two steep inclines, he stopped where a slab of stone was exposed. Considering how the earth blocked approach from the sides, he drew his father's sword and turned.
Mat drew the Dagger he had taken from Shadar Logoth and stepped beside Rand. He paused and turned to look at the exposed stone. "This used to be a building or something."
"That's not important now. . ." Rand was cut off as one of the approaching Trollocs paused to draw it's bow and release. The arrow shot forward, arching at the two, almost missing it's target. Rand grabbed his arm where it had been scratched by the arrows passing barbs and instinctively stepped back against the wall. Which collapsed inward under the pressure, causing Rand to stumble into the unlit interior of the mound.
Rand staggered backward, trying to keep from falling, his hands flailing. Suddenly his seat struck something, allowing him to halt his movement. He instinctively glanced down to see what he had hit.
On the stone table lay a dead body, it's flesh withered and dry. The corpse's was dressed in red hued black leather, white hair still attached to it's head.
Rand quickly turned his head from the corpse. "It's a tomb." He looked up to the opening where Mat was holding his dagger as Trollocs advanced toward the tomb. "Think about that later." He said as he readied his sword and walked next to Mat.
Rand looked at the Trollocs, counting briefly. 'Too many of them.' he realized. Then he blinked in surprise as he saw them freeze, staring at them with apparent fear in their eyes. Wondering what they saw, he suddenly felt a touch at the wound on his arm. He looked down at the two fingers which had wiped away some of the blood, and turned his head so he could follow the fingers as they traveled up to where they were licked by a tongue. "Light!" he said as he pushed himself to the side of the tomb, away from the figure that looked like the corpse, only with the desiccated flesh filled out again.
"Tasty." The figure commented in a deep voice, it's mouth splitting in a wide grin revealing his fangs.
From behind the Trollocs a Myrddraal stepped forward, admonishing the creatures angrily. The Trollocs looked uncertainly a moment, then charged forward.
"One moment." The figure from the tomb commented as he walked forward past Mat. He casually strode toward the charging Trollocs, the smile never leaving his face.
As the Trollocs swung their curved blades at the mysterious figure, his form suddenly seemed to blur. The Trollocs suddenly screamed as the arms wielding the blades were torn off at the shoulder. The figure licked a little blood from one of the arms, and grimaced. "Nasty." He commented as he tossed the arms aside.
An uncertain look on it's face, the Myrddraal drew it's black as midnight blade, and screamed commands to the remaining Trollocs, who formed up in front of it in response.
The figure from the tomb looked at the group before him consideringly, then shook his head. From somewhere he drew a black metal object that Rand briefly thought was a type of crossbow, until he realized that it lacked a crosspiece. Suddenly with a loud crack as a flare of fire emerged from the end of the object. Seemingly at the same time, an expanding hole suddenly opened in the Myrddraal's chest, it's expansion severing the Shadowspawns head and right arm.
As the Trollocs collapsed in agony, the figure put away the metal object and turned back to Mat and Rand, who were staring at him fearfully, their weapons held before them.
"Who, W-What are you?" Rand asked.
"Vampires have become so rare you have to ask?" The figure commented. Suddenly his appearance shifted, his hair shortening and turning black, while the leather outfit became a red greatcoat of a design neither of the farmers had ever seen before. Placing a red wide brimmed hat on his head the Vampire continued. "My name is Alucard." He walked forward, ignoring the tensing and motion of the weapons.
A pace from Rand, Alucard halted. He looked at Rand a moment, then dropped to one knee. "And I thank you for waking me, My Master."
Rand blinked. "Wh-What do you. . . I'm just. . . Why Me?"
Alucard rose to his feet. "You woke me, and I have sworn to serve the one who's blood wakes me." He grinned. "And I can smell the destiny about you." He raised a hand to fan toward his nose as he sniffed the air. "You smell of great change and great destruction. Soon thousands shall die in your name, at your command. Serving you will be a good way to avoid boredom."
Rand shook his head. "I'm just a shepherd. . ."
