Setsuna Whispered a single name...
The name caused the goddesses present to stiffen in shock at what may be approaching... for the name Setsuna spoke was…
“Unicron…”
“U-Unicron!?” Sputtered Urd “Unicron, the Devourer of Worlds, is coming here!?”
Setsuna nodded.
“Oh, dear,” Said Belldandy, “This is terrible. If he’s coming here…”
Everyone else looked at each other in confusion.
“Excuse me,” Said Ranma, “But who, or what, is Unicron?”
The three goddesses were silent for a moment before Skuld spoke.
“You may as well sit down, and get comfortable. We have a long story to tell.”
After the audience did so, Skuld cleared her throat and began.
“Many eons ago, before the universe as we know it even existed, there was another universe. Within this universe was a being called Unicron. Now, Unicron was a fallen god who sought, what he termed, the ultimate peace.”
“Ultimate peace?” wondered Usagi, “That doesn’t sound so bad.”
Urd scoffed. “Oblivion.”
“Oh.”
“Anyway,” continued Skuld, “As I said, Unicron sought the ultimate peace, or oblivion as you put it, via the destruction of all life and existence. Amazingly, he actually succeeded. He wiped out all life, planets, nebulae, stars, even the stuff of space itself. After he finished, he went into a deep sleep, leaving the entire universe in a state of nothingness… Or so he thought.”
“So he thought?” asked Minako.
Urd took a big breath before speaking. “He wasn’t quite thorough enough. There were countless fragments from the old universe still around. While Unicron slept, these fragments reacted to each other, eventually creating another universe; our universe.”
“The core of this new universe,” said Belldandy, “somehow became sentient. It sensed the threat Unicron posed to it, and created three beings to defend itself. Those three are known as the Triumvirate.”
“The Tri-what?” asked Ranma.
“The Triumvirate.” said Skuld, nodding, “Kami-sama, Hild-sama, and Primus-sama. Kami-sama and Hild-sama were created to keep balance in the universe, while Primus-sama was created to combat Unicron. The Core then itself split it’s consciousness between the three, leaving its body to become Yggdrasil, the world computer.”
“By this time,” Said Urd, “Unicron had woken up and resumed his old work. With Primus-samas’ role in the universe, it was inevitable that the two would come into conflict. Their battles were monumental in scale, and, for a while, neither combatant was able to gain a decisive advantage.” She sighed, “Over time, however, it seemed more and more apparent that the Devourer would win.”
“But, why?” Said Setsuna, “I thought you said they were in a stalemate.”
“They were.” Said the goddess of the past, “But it didn’t matter. Their constant battling had carved a path of destruction all across the cosmos, wiping out the life Primus had sworn to protect. When he realized this, Primus shifted the battle to the Astral Plane.”
“Unfortunately,” Said Belldandy, “He fared little better there. In the end, he was forced into, what appeared to be, a sacrifice play. He shifted both himself, and Unicron, back into the Physical Plane without giving either time to properly generate their energy forms. This resulted in the two of them becoming imprisoned in a pair of barren asteroids, effectively stranding them.”
“But if Unicron was trapped in an asteroid,” asked Ranma, “how could he threaten the world in the future?”
Urd shook her head. “Unfortunately, the imprisonment was only temporary. Over the eons, Unicron learned how to psionically shape his asteroid, eventually turning it into a metallic planet. He also gave himself the ability to change into a giant robot. In these new forms he was able to escape, and once again proceeded to wreck the universe.”
“What about Primus,” Asked Usagi, “Did he escape?”
“No,” Said Skuld, “He feared that if he followed Unicrons’ example, their battle would simply pick up where it left off. Instead, he opted to create a planet of his own race of transforming mechanical beings. From what we understand, Primus gave these ‘Transformers’ the ability to destroy Unicron.”
“What do you mean?” asked Brianna.
“We can’t confirm it.” Said Skuld, “Father, Kami-sama, told us that Primus wanted it kept quiet. Apparently, he wants the Transformers to figure it out for themselves. So everything about that subject is classified.” She sighed, “Anyway, that’s the whole story. Since he was freed, Unicron’s been going across the cosmos, condemning whole races to extinction, devouring anything in his way, and in general just being a real pain in Fathers’ side.”
There was a moment of silence as everyone digested the tale. Finally, Brianna stood up.
“Okay,” She said, “Let me get this straight.” She turned to the goddesses. “You say that there’s this ancient, evil god named Unicron who takes the form of a mechanical planet that can change into a robot, correct?” They nodded, “And, apparently for lack of anything better to do, he decides to destroy the entire universe. So, he goes around eating anything, and anyone, in his way, just to accomplish this goal?” Again, the goddesses nodded. “And, though you can’t prove it, you believe that the people of Unicrons’ enemy, Primus, hold the secret of destroying him?” Again, they confirmed it.
She turned to Setsuna. “Now, according to you, the Senshi fight a series of increasingly more powerful, but similar foes. The last of these menaces is Unicron, who will come to Earth in order to destroy it, right?” The Guardian of the time gates nodded, “So, in order to stop him, Usagi,” She glanced at the princess, “had to use some sort of powerful object – you called it the ginzuishou?” Again Setsuna nodded, “Usagi used the ginzuishou to stop Unicron, in the process turning off the sun, demolishing both Heaven and Hell, turning hyperspace into a raging inferno, obliterating the entire world of Jade, and causing the deaths of – what? – OVER ONE HUNDRED BILLION PEOPLE!?”
Setsuna bowed her head. Brianna took a breath to calm herself down, and went back to her original seat. “So what do we do?”
