What could happen during a meeting between a miko that’s known to take things seriously and, even literally, give her all, and a miko that feels like the first miko’s two blonde best friends, except for her red hair?
Hino Rei had heard of a newly-renovated shrine and that its resident miko was very, very, good. That they’d meet sooner or later was thus pretty much a given.
Three miles distant, she could tell that there was something to the stories and rumours. The power she felt was such that only Ise and a few other shrines could top it -- and Three Fates, like her own home shrine, Fire Stream (Hikawa), was a far smaller shrine than Ise! (FYI: The Grand Shrine at Ise is pretty much sanctum sanctorum among Shinto shrines.)
So it was with a mixture of curiosity, trepidation, excitement and resolution that Rei climbed the shrine steps. She soon spotted the resident miko.
‘Red hair? If we made friends, I’d have the whole gamut of colours in my friends’ hair. Almost the same colour as the hakama. Is she from a shrine in America? Didn’t know there were any. Blue eyes? In a Japanese? Odd.’
That Sif had only a few weeks as miko under her belt surprised Rei greatly. She could have sworn it was years, were it not for the obvious beginner style of the shrine’s amulet stock.
Soon, Sif was picking up tips, tricks and techniques from Rei, and they were on their way to become fast friends.
