The Primarchs. Genetically designed supermen, made by the Emperor of Man to become the progenitors of the Legions of the Adeptus Astartes. Lost, to treachery or random chance no one knows, but they were taken from the safety of the labs on Holy Terra and spread across the galaxy.
The Lost Sons of God.
Of the twenty Primarchs known to have been created, only eighteen were found - the father of the Second and the Eleventh Legion were never rediscovered. Those who were discovered, were discovered in a wide range of environments - from high courts in advanced realms to the brutal warrior-tribes on feudal planets to those raised both literally and figuratively by the wolves on deathworlds. As brother after brother was found and rejoined with his family, they were given command over the Legions created with their Geneseed, and sent out to continue the Great Crusade - the Emperor's effort to reunite mankind after the Age of Strife.
And it nearly succeeded. Most of the galaxy was conquered, technology under the guidance of the Cult of Mars was improving, worlds became interconnected and the stage was set for a Golden Age, when disaster struck - Horus, first found Primarch, the Emperor's most beloved son, Warmaster and leader of the total military might of the Imperium... Turned traitor.
In the blink of an eye, everything collapsed, as the great Legions fought one another, brother against brother, father against son. Worlds burned and blood flowed in oceans, until the wicked armies of Horus laid siege unto Holy Terra itself. Though empowered by the Dark Gods of Chaos, he was still defeated by the Emperor in the end. Still, the Emperor was mortally wounded, and was interred on the Golden Throne to prevent him from dying and thus destroying what was left of the Imperium of Man. In the aftermath, half of the eighteen Legions had turned traitor, countless billions of billions lay dead throughout the galaxy. Several Primarchs had been slain, some had disappeared, and those who remained did not do so for long before they, too, vanished without a trace in their struggle against the Great Enemy.
Ranma Saotome didn't live on Holy Terra. Nor did he live in the Imperium. In fact, he didn't even live on a planet in the same dimension. Yet, it is the Nature of Chaos in general, and the Warp in particular, which ensured that the man whose body lay in the pool he was about to enter had ended up in a reality not his own.
