Saotome Ranma (Post-Saffron, that is) would normally be an incredibly powerful martial artist with amazing skills. However, this was a Ranma who had just skipped some of the training trip, mostly right before China and Jusenkyo, (meaning about 6 months to 3 yr.s, depending on the source,) though this version did sometimes have memories, brief flashbacks and insights of and from the life of a Post-Saffron Ranma and had put them to good use.
What does all this mean you ask? Basically, Ranma as he is now, is about as good he was mid anime/mid-manga, with the potential to use skills and technique from Post-Saffron. This makes him significantly better as a fighter in theory, but he had yet to actually perform his new skills and techniques in actual battle, fights with Genma not really counting since he has become a good bit better than him, or at least equal.
The Demon, however, was a horrible, evil creature not sent by another semi-competent SM baddie, but by a warlord named Randolf. Randolf was actually a Nazi general from WWII who had been a part of specialized sect of Hitler's army. Randolf and his small sect included warriors of a calibure that you normally find in Rurouni Kenshin, Fist of the Northstar, Fatal Fury, Street Fighter, and other such sources. It also included mages specializing in black magic, the exact opposite of the magic used to create the Silver Millenium and and most of the Senshi's equipment.
There were also other such specialists in the small sect, though other than a few grunts the key members of the occult sect of Hitler's army never numbered more than twelve in number, including General Randolf himself. At the end of WWII, when Hitler had committed suicide, Randolf and his troops beat a retreat into a Hell dimension well removed from the realm that Earth and its neighboring planets rested in.
It had been a hard and grueling stay for General Randolf and his troops, but they had finally managed to escape. They had left several troops behind, but had gained just as many in their place. Among the things they gotten out of the Hell dimension that they valued most, however, was a she-demon by the name of Helluv. With the right rituals, achemical formulae, and technological devices, they had managed to put Helluv into a state in which she would mass produce demons twice as powerful as her and the being that would mate with her. They planned to use Helluv to mass-produce an army of demons with which they could finish what their great leader had started.
The particular demon Ranma was fighting now had been created with a Blaekiir as the father. These beasts were nothing at all like the kind of monsters normally fought by the Sailor Senshi, being much stronger and more powerful than a Youma, Daimon, Cardian, or even one of Galxia's beasts. It had taken all of the sheer might and tenacity Randolph and his troops had to subdue and capture even one.
At his absolute best, 2 years Post Saffron, Ranma probably could have beaten one, though he would have sustained heavy injuries. As he was now, facing a creature twice as power a pure Blaekiir, Ranma didn't stand a chance in Hades of beating it outrgiht.
But then, again, if he played his cards right, he might not have to.
