Doubly Cursed: The price that was paid (DARK) [Episode 36651]

The resulting blast was visible for miles and few could comprehend the terrible meaning of what they were seeing, feeling little more than an instinctive sense of dread at what the blood red pillar* foretold. Fewer still could bear the sheer horror they were greeted with upon their arrival. Ranma's Perfect Shi Shi Hokodan had quite literally vaporized all of the buildings within a one block radius and in the process, had dug a crater which at the center was over 100 feet deep. As for Ranma herself, she was seen as nothing more than a barely visible speck at the center of the looming black pit. Whether she was alive or dead, none could know for certain.

Akane was sitting quietly in a corner of the hospital room in a state of shock. This day had just been too much to handle. When she first saw the pillar of energy, she had thought that Ryoga was trying to beat Ranma again. It was a different color than before so he must have found some way to improve it. But when she arrived at the scene, she was overwhelmed by the amount of devastation which had been caused. It took her a few minutes to notice and identify the speck at the center of the crater. It was Ranma, female and naked, except for a weird piece of jewelery around his** neck. The shock was great enough that, for the moment at least, it managed to override the lingering effects of the flu, leaving her with a completely clear head. She had immediately called an ambulance and it turned out that he was not just unconscious but rather, he was in a coma. To make things worse, the hot water hadn't worked. A tear trickled down her cheek at the thought that he might never wake up. Another followed at the thought that the open water kettle*** had been lost forever in the rubble of horaisan province's mountain. At that point Akane broke down crying.

Ranma didn't know where she was and she didn't care. Who was she? She didn't care. Was she dead? It didn't matter. She felt a faint call but didn't heed it. All that was mattered not as she drifted ever deeper into the merciful blackness.

* In the anime series, the Shi Shi Hokodan perfect is a red, slightly pink, color. This one is so powerful that it's a much darker shade and therefore blood red. Want a scientific explanation? The light has to pass through more energy and therefore gets filtered even more than by a regular Shi Shi Hokodan perfect.

** To anybody who hasn't read or watched Ranma in a while (or never) , Akane always refers to Ranma by his true gender and in addition, she doesn't know the nature of the new curse yet.

*** To Akane's knowledge, the only method of locking someone into their cursed form is by splashing someone with water from a magic ladle (See Ranma 1/2 manga volumes 24 and 25). The full body cat-tongue point doesn't count since it increases heat sensitivity rather than truly locking the person's form. The only way to remove the lock is by using water boiled in another artifact of the musk dynasty, the Open Water Kettle. All evidence suggests that both of these artifacts are now lost in the remains of horaisan province's mountain.
