Ranma looked more closely at the faded curtain, thinking it must be at least thirty years old and worn through in some places. He and Akane looked at each other briefly and shrugged. Akane pointed out a barrel in one corner that looked as if it was being lived in, and she tiptoed over to see what was inside. In her first glance, all she could see was a faded pointy hat with the word "wizzard" stitched inexpertly into it sitting on a lamp.
Suddenly, crackly voice erupted from above them “Who dares enter the domain of the Wizard of Odds?” Ranma and Akane looked at each other and cringed slightly. “No one disturbs me during my nap, I mean were you invited?”
As Ranma opened his mouth to answer, the voice roared “Silence!” A crash of thunder and flicker of lightning erupted as this was said. “Only the Wizard of Odds is allowed to…” At this point, a huge ripping noise was heard, and a section of the tatty green curtain fell away to reveal an old man with a microphone in one hand, the other on a light switch and his foot on a bass drum pedal connected to a sheet of aluminum siding. The other foot was on the length of curtain that had just fallen away.
The old man looked wildly about for a moment, then hurriedly said into the microphone “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!” Flicking the light switch a few times, a bulb high in the fire escape went on and off, making what was obviously a pathetic lighting flash. Nearby, but hidden under cornices or security cameras were speakers. When he saw that Ranma and Akane were not going to buy it any longer, he sighed and dropped the act.
“So, what in the world are you thinking, that this would work? The Wizard of Odds! Haw!” Ranma said.
Putting on his tall, pointy hat, the wizard looked at him disdainfully. “I’ll have you know, it’s worked for nigh on twenty years. Pretty good odds, I’d say.” He adjusted his robes, dusting them off and checking his pockets. “Dried frog pill?” he offered Ranma and Akane. When they refused with a shudder, he shrugged and went on. “I’ve been stuck in some strange places before, but I’ve always made it back home, and I’ve never lost my luggage before.”
Ranma and Akane…
