Ranma looked dubious, thinking about the image this wizard had presented to him so far, but after looking at Akane start to chase her tail with obvious enjoyment, he agreed. “Yeah, I guess so.”
As they started to walk out of the alleyway, Rincewind quickly set up his guard system again. “You would not believe how well that has worked,” he told the pair. “Now find me that egg and come back soon. In fact, find two. I haven’t had breakfast yet.”
Ranma nodded and quickly exited. “Man, that guy is a loon.” When he didn’t hear any reply, he looked around and noticed that Akane had stayed behind and was currently playing “Fetch” with the wizard with an old stick she found in the alley. He sighed. “Akane! Heel!” At that command, she quickly dropped the stick and trotted over to him, smiling. It was amazing, he thought. She even followed his commands. Did he really want to change her back? Ranma immediately squashed that thought. Everyone would kill him if he didn’t, so there was no use even idly considering.
Akane arrived at Ranma’s side, her tongue lolling out of the side of her mouth happily. “That was fun. Can we play “Fetch” again?” Akane asked. A mischievous glint came into her big brown puppy eyes. “I can fetch your stick? Or chase your balls?” She licked her lips in anticipation.
Ranma face-faulted. He finally managed to get out “W-we-we’re gonna get an egg for the wizard to change you back to normal, and that’s it!
Akane pouted, but said okay. “So where are we going?”
“I guess a grocery or market is the best choice. The nearest one, what do you say?”
“Sounds good to me!” But then again, whatever he said was right with her.
They were walking for a few minutes when there was a corner grocery, a mom and pop store. Ranma and Akane entered the shop, the bell above the door jangling, but the old man behind the counter angrily croaked out “No pets! She’ll have to stay outside! And tie her up! I don’t want any loose animals running wild in my store!”
Ranma turned to the dog-girl next to him. “Sorry, Akane. You don’t mind waiting outside, do you? It’ll just be a minute.” He frowned at the owner as he led her back outside and to a stop sign.
Akane smiled at Ranma. “No way! I’m a good girl! I can wait for you! I’ll be right here, I promise.” She whined slightly as he tied the leash to the signpost, but didn’t untie it, as he was her master as she wouldn’t disobey him.
Ranma patted her on the head, took a couple of steps away and said firmly, “Akane, stay.” She pulled slightly toward him on the leash, but remained in place. “Good girl. I’ll be right back.” And with that, Ranma disappeared into the store.
Back inside the grocery, Ranma approached the man behind the counter. “You didn’t have to do that, you know.”
“Bah. I know all about those pets. That store is right near my shop. You don’t think they come in here all the time? I don’t trust ‘em. Now, do you want to buy something or are you just wasting my time?”
Ranma was taken aback at the man’s vehemence, but decided not to question it. “Uh yeah, do you have any eggs?”
“In the back.”
Ranma quickly found a carton of six and returned to the counter. He paid for them and headed to the door. As he pushed it open, the bell jangled again, and the owner disappeared into the back.
Ranma emerged into the sunlight and blinked. He looked for Akane.
“No, Ryoga, it’s not like that, I swear! Ow!”
