Ranma One Half. It's all in the title.
In Mihoshi's world of origin, Ranma's adventures had been first a successful manga then an anime, which spawned in turn movies, games and other pieces of merchandising. It was one of her favorites and meeting him in person to grant him a wish had been so COOL!
If Genma wasn't Ranma's father this time around, he wouldn't go to Juysenkyo and pick up his girl curse. While the old Ranma certainly didn't mind, the meaning of the whole Ranma 1/2 concept would be lost.
Thankfully, Genie Mihoshi was on the job! One Half could indicate something else than gender switches. That's when she got this idea of giving Ranma a non-human father. One half human sounded so much better than one half man!
