Ranma just continued to blink, listening intently as Kaede told her tale of Inuyasha, of the Shikon no Tama, of Naraku, battles of fifty years ago, and the battles of the present, of time traveling shrine girls and undead sisters who were the same soul. In the end when she concluded it, he said the first thing that came to his mind.
“Gotta admit, that’s a new one on me,” he said, scratching his head.
Kaede nodded, as she stirred the soup she had been preparing to eat that night, now that she had a dinner guest to share it with. “Aye, it is. This is a chaotic era we do live in.”
As he received a bowl of the soup, he could only stare into it. It sounded like something out of those shows Nabiki always watched on the television; although he hoped it didn’t include girls fighting in school fukus. That just seemed like the worst thing to wear in a battle.
“Achoo!”
“Are you alright, Kagome?” asked Inuyasha. “You’ve been sneezing a lot.”
“Perhaps someone is talking about you,” said Miroku, as he walked beside the group.
“I don’t know, maybe. But who’d be talking about me?”
“Forgive me,” said Kaede, rubbing her nose a bit. “I do hope I am not catching some sickness.”
Ranma just smiled slightly, as he began to consume his food. Well, it wasn’t like they were insisting he go out and fight for them or something like that. Oh sure, despite his cleansed karma, he knew that eventually he’d be dragged into it.
He was always dragged into things like that, probably some bored Kami or something like that enjoyed watching him jump through hoops.
But for the moment, things were looking up. As far as he heard, not once was the name ‘Saotome’ mentioned, so he wasn’t honor-bound to do anything to help. Right now, he was essentially free; no fiancées, no rivals, no overbearing elderly morons who wanted to force him to do what they wanted so they could sit on their asses all day playing shogi, no supremely elderly know-it-alls who made his life a living Hell by making him the fall guy for their illegal activities or to alleviate their boredom.
He had a clean slate, an honest job, a place to stay, and was standing on his own two feet.
Okay, so he was sitting in the cottage of the shrine priestess, bumming some food off her with the promise to help around the village tomorrow. He was moving up at least, assuming he didn’t attract the attention of the previous incarnation of Akane.
And there was no way any of them could come back here and drag him back. Things were finally looking up for him.
Kaede blinked as a loud roar of thunder rattled across the small village. “Oh my, I didn’t think we would be getting rain today.”
Ranma shrunk into himself. Oh yeah, he still had to tell them about the curse. Didn’t want some lonely villager pulling a Kuno and chasing after the new redhead in town; best to nip that in the bud right now.
