Now this was caused by an evil mad scientist named Doctor Francine Von Furter, bwahahahahaha!
Ahem.
In any case she'd cased the sites of youma battles and other appearances of the Sailor Senshi, then cloned them to be her very own superpowered sexpets and then she could defeat the originals and enslave them! Eventually leading to taking over the world! All she had to do was connect missing DNA sequences with sequences from various animals - giving her own Senshi an animalistic edge over their originals! Bwahahahahahahaha!
Unfortunately, she'd made one teeny tiny little mistake. In putting her labs outside the usual stomping grounds for the Senshi, she'd placed it in Nerima.
One day Akane had gotten angry at Ranma's remark that her cookies were less loathsome than usual, Ranma had gone flying, crashing through the roof of the hidden lab, and waking up the supersoldiers long enough for them to imprint on him. In the resulting fight between the Sailor Pets and the Mad Scientist's legion of zombie punk rockers - the lab had exploded.
Leaving Ranma the owner/master/friend/beloved of nine superpowered pets.
Naturally, not having any other clue what to do with nine semi-human pets, he made them students of his martial arts style.
(To the extreme disappointment of several of them, who wanted to do something else under him besides study.)
