Hammond was silent as the young Lieutenant explained Basts requests. "This Jaffa... is one of her experiments?" he asked.
"That's what she said sir," Eric replied. "She said that she had made an agreement with an associate. She never said who it was, only that it was an old associate, and that she intended to keep her word about completing it."
"I see. And the rest of your team?"
"Major Jamesion and Captain Hutchins were both killed in the initial Jaffa ambush. Lieutenant Rollins and Doctor Mitchell are recovering on Bast's world."
Hammond nodded, and considered his options for a moment. "Lieutenant, do you believe that they are in any real danger at the moment?"
"I don't believe so sir. Bast seemed ready and willing to honor her word. If we agree to help her with this new Jaffa, she's more then willing to work with us."
"And the hostage that you brought back?"
"She may well be considered expendible by Bast sir," Eric admitted. "But at the same time, it could be considered a sign of goodwill. If it is, I think we may have a lot to benefit from if we agree."
"Very well. Cleo will remain in your custody assuming Dr Fraiser confirms she isn't carrying a form of explosives or viral agent. Due to her... unique appearance, you'll have to remain on base for the time being. Dismissed." As the young officer left, Hammond turned his attention to the speaker phone. "Teal'c, your assesment?"
"As I have said, Bast is feared and respected by both the Tok'ra and the Gou'ld," he replied, "and she is known for always doing her best to keep her word. Her honest nature and methods of controlling her people have meant that the System Lords do not trust her."
"System Lord or not General," O'Neil interupted, "she's a Gou'ld. She still enslaves people, and she's still a damn snake."
"I'm aware of that Colonel," Hammond replied, "however, she does have two of our people hostage. I don't see any other option for the time being."
"I hate when this happens," Jack growled.
"I know, and to be honest, I'm not a big fan of it myself. But there's not many other options." He was silent for a moment, then continued. "What do you have to report?"
In Alanta, Jack looked out the window in time to see Brianna and Brittany Diggers race past on their morning run. "It's... an interesting place," he said.
