Every once in a while, even the most unlikely of people come up with a good idea.
For this reason, Soun remained adamant on 'procuring' the "A Beginner's Guide to Boiling Water" book. Even when Genma argued for "Aphrodisiacs Aplenty," Soun stood by his choice.
After all, he figured that if Akane could cook a decent meal, Ranma wouldn't have an excuse to leave. And it would be a boost to Akane's self-esteem, too.
Besides, the book was "Guaranteed to turn anyone into an adequate cook, or quadruple your money back!" After Akane learned how not to ruin instant ramen... they could come back for other books.
Thus it was that the only inherently foolish thing they did that day was steal a book from that book store.
At least, so it seemed.
The truth was something that any serious student of magic learned right away. It was drilled into them to the point that the mumbled it in their sleep for months.
"Check Before You Mix Magics."
Rather like drugs, mixing more than one kind of magic on one person can have cause unforeseen side effects. The "Beginner's Guide to Boiling Water" wasn't a very powerful magic book, but it did use a sort of magical 'program' to teach those who read it.
Anyone who was supposed to be in the store would have known to have another magic user check Akane before they gave her that book... so as not to risk all Hell breaking loose.
Perhaps literally.
...
Pity, isn't it? Even when they catch a clue, Genma and Soun can manage to screw things up...

Akane sighed as she walked into the kitchen. Ranma was not happy with her at the moment. They'd managed to find the wizard who had cursed her, then Ranma spent most of the day gathering the ingredients for the spell she had destroyed to get him to release the curse. Then he'd had to go gathering even weirder stuff to undo what Kasumi had inadvertently done to her.
It hadn't helped that Akane had been working against him at the end. But thanks to that collar, she hadn't wanted to go back to being human...
And then to top it all off, Ranma learned that the wizard could have cured his Jusenkyo curse... but wasn't going to because he didn't want to be bothered by either of them ever again.
No, Ranma was not in a good mood.
Akane looked at the book her father had given her. She grimaced at the embarrassing name... but...
Mabe if she did cook something... something that didn't turn out tasting like garbage... maybe Ranma's mood would improve a bit...
So, unaware that she was about to risk something happening that would make her wish she just turned into a dog, Akane opened the book, and began to read it.
