Madoka Mano frowned when her granddaughter related the tale.
"So what do you think?" Yohko asked.
"Well... we can only hope that this is some kind of psychopath. Regrettable, but not our problem."
Yohko blinked. That wasn't the answer she expected from her grandmother. "Would I be able to tell if a vampire was around?"
Madoka snorted. "Define 'vampire.'"
"Huh?"
"There are two kinds of Vampires. The kind you're probably thinking about - sucking blood, terrorizing people, raising the dead, and all the other Hollywood favorites - are really a kind of demon. Someone evil sold their soul, and gets it replaced with a demon. The combined being is almost unstoppable. If one of those were in the area, everyone even mildly sensitive to spiritual powers would have known about it.
"The other kind of vampire is the true vampire. They are actually a type of human, one of several so-called monsters that were really just off shoots of humans, in fact. They all ultimately bred into the same genepool as the rest of us and effectively became extinct. Every once in a while, though, someone is born who has enough of those genetic traits that they might as well be one of those lost off-shoots. Vampires - true vampires, that is - would be very sensitive to UV radiation, and unable to handle most solid foods. At the same time, they were generally much stronger then they looked, and tended to live a lot longer as well. But in truth, would be as killable as any other human." Madoka sighed. "In this day and age, with so many advances in medical technology, such a throwback could be virtually undetectable. And, being natural, not supernatural, would register as just another ordinary person to us."
"Oh." Yohko was stunned. She'd never heard of this before.
"If that girl was a true vampire, then there's probably some fanatic running around again, trying to 'Cleanse the World of Evil.' If there is, you and Azusa need to be careful. Those kind of people are as likely to target you as they would the demons you hunt."
Yohko shuddered, and held her hand over her heart. "Brr... I wouldn't want that. The idea of some sicko taking my heart for a trophy..."
"WHAT?!"
Yohko fell over at her grandmother's shout. "Huh?"
"You didn't mention that the heart had been taken, Yohko!"
"Sorry, must have slipped my mind... what's wrong?"
Madoka sat down, looking pale. "Remember what I said about the demonic vampire? Well, the ritual, where the human replaces his own soul with a demon... it requires many thing. One of those is the heart of a true vampire..."
Yohko swallowed. This could turn out to be very bad...
