As towns went, it wasn't much. A few homes, a general store, a saloon/hotel, a church, and a few other buildings and homes. Nothing of any particular note, really.
Still... Vash could tell something was wrong. Maybe it was the lack of people. Or maybe it was the unnatural quiet.
BANG!
Or maybe it had to do with the tall man pointing a rifle at them...
"That's far 'nough." The man said, a star badge on his coat indicating that he was the sheriff. A gasp from Rogue indicated that she saw the two people moving up behind them, each with guns of their own.
"Don' take this the wrong way, friend. But we'd really rather you an' the girl jus' hold still a moment, an' not put up a fuss."
"Did we do something wrong, Sheriff?" Vash asked with a smile.
"Nope. We jus' bein' cautious, 'sall. So's we'd like ta ask that you disarm while in our town."
Vash studied the man a moment, and then slowly opened his coat, exposing his gun. One of the deputies took it, and then both he and Rogue were quickly frisked. The deputy handed the silver gun to the Sheriff, and said, "This is all, Jack."
The Sheriff - Jack - whistled as he looked over the gun. "Mighty fine piece you have here, friend. Bit on the heavy side, though."
Vash shrugged. "It has... sentimental value."
Jack raised his rifle, and Rogue breathed a sigh of relief. "Well, now that all that unpleasantness is done, How's about I treat you two ta a drink? Jus' for bein' cooperative an all."
_-=^=-_
Actually, their welcoming aside, Jack and the other people of the town turned out to be some good folk.
"Sorry 'bout all that." Jack said. "We've had some troubles recently with some of those raiders. Maybe made us a bit too cautious, but I'd rather be safe then sorry, ya know."
Vash nodded. "No problem." Much better than people running and screaming, at any rate.
"Now, if ya don' mind me askin'... ya a Ranger, or jus' a merc?"
"Well, some people have called me a ranger..."
Jack nodded. "An' you, missy?"
Rogue blinked, looking up from her drink. "Ah... Vash's teaching me how to fight..."
If Jack recognized the name of the Humanoid Typhoon, he gave no indication of it. "So, a Ranger an' his 'prentice." Both Vash and Rouge blinked at that description, but didn't correct him, "Well, then I gotta job fer ya, if yer willin'. As I said, We've had some problem wit' raiders recently. Now, we can't 'xactly pay much, but if ya'll'd stay fer a day or three, an help out if the raiders come back... well, we'd really 'preciate that."
"Why only three days?"
Jack shrugged. "Militia's on it's way from Old October Town. They get here, they'll run the raiders off, or stomp them out. Either way, they'll take care of the problem. Thing is, that aint 'xactly a secret, you know. So I figure the Raiders are gonna try one more big raid 'fore they get here. An' if that happens, well, I c'n use every gun I c'n get. I've already got some wanderer helpin' out, but as I said, better safe than sorry."
Vash looked a Rogue for a moment, and then...
