The Dark Lord then scampered of to his own subterranean hell realm content in his victory, which seemed complete. As humanity was virtually exterminated, the god was weakened without worshipers and sealed for what looked to be all time. The world was “safe” for rampaging hoards of demons and monsters so there was no need to worry. Or at least it seemed as such.
One location, once place of power was out of the demons direct influence, the god’s sky realm and his servants who dwelt there. On the deity’s castle on a cloud his servant labored endlessly to free their lord and restore good to the world.
For thousands of years they used their power, which was greatly reduced by their masters absence to wear away at the wards holding their lord. The process was painfully slow, like wearing away at a mountain with rain, but like all geological effects the wards eventually shattered. This was both their most momentous event, and their greatest disaster.
The god, their master, was long dead. It is possible for gods to die. They just have to let go and allow their spirits to move on, but when they do die the spark that makes a god remains. It is the divine essence which makes a god and this essence is eternal and everlasting.
This left the servants in quite a conundrum. None of them could take on the essence. They were created to serve and none of them were capable of being the master. They needed a mortal soul to bond to it, someone with free will and a noble soul, but there were no mortals left, or at least none left who did not owe their allegiance to the long withdrawal Dark Lord.
They searched and searched, and if by accident they came upon an answer for in another world, a hero, a man of virtue had died. As they saw his spirit leave his body, and depart for the next life they saw their chance. After all, what did they have to loose?
They snatched this spirit from the wheel of death and rebirth, imbuing it with the power of the gods and a great responsibility: To cleanse the world of evil, restore humanity, grow strong through their worship, and defeat the forces of darkness...
