The modernization of Japan that had begun under Emperor Taisho's predecessor, Emperor Meiji, has continued unabated. Japan's technology has caught up with that of the West in many areas, and rumors abound that it has even taken the lead in a few. The streets of Tokyo are filled with not just pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles, but also with automobiles of both the steam-powered and the gasoline-powered varieties. If one looked to the sky, the occasional propeller-driven airplane or zepplin could be seen passing overhead.
Ranma, however, had yet to become aware that he had been sent eighty years into the past. He was still disoriented, his memories of his new life a jumble. He knew that he was Ensign Saotome Ranma, Japanese Imperial Navy, and that he was here to begin a new assignment, but further detail eluded him.
Thus, he was slightly surprised when a teenaged girl in a kimono, whose long blonde hair was done up in buns on either side of her head with long ponytails trailing below, addressed him.
"Hello, are you Ensign Saotome Ranma?" the girl asked.
"Um, yes," Ranma stammered. "And you are...?"
The girl smiled. "I'm Tsukino Usagi of the Gekkoku Kageki Dan. I hear they've assigned you to command our new unit."
"Uh...something like that."
Usagi took Ranma's arm and began dragging him along towards the Gekkoku Kagekijo, also known as the Lunar Kingdom Opera House. Along the way, she explained Ranma's assignment to him. He was to take command of the new Hanagumi unit. Although their cover was that they were members of the Moon Kingdom Operatic Troupe (Gekkoku Kageki Dan), their real job was that of the newest unit of the other Gekkoku Kageki Dan, written with Kanji meaning "Moon Kingdom Flower Division Combat Force", which was:
