Truth In Darkness: Secrets Left Unsaid [Episode 52822]

by Kender

Shinji had been walking home from school, but hadn't been truly caring about getting there. Misato was working late, Asuka was at Hikari's and Pen Pen was spending the night at the vet's. That meant that he was heading back to an empty apartment, which would be occupied only by himself. It would be lonely and silent, though it didn't get much better when they were around.

Still, he had to get home, and was in the middle of doing that when he heard shouts coming from down the street. He turned to look and saw a man in a trenchcoat running up the street, heading where he was standing. The man looked panicked, and glanced over his shoulder at the shouts from behind him. When he looked back, he was standing over Shinji, and couldn't stop in time to avoid a collision.

They went down in a tangle of limbs, but the man recovered quickly. Getting up, he spared Shinji only a glance before rushing off. After they had left long enough, he made his way out of his hiding spot, and stopped to look the way they went. When a gunshot went off, he froze and then bolted, hurrying back home.

Sitting in front of his computer half an hour later, Shinji licked his lips and put the disc he had 'aquired' into the drive. As the machine read the data, he wondered what was so important that people were willing to kill over it. Perhaps it wasn't the disc that was what they were after, but he seriously doubted that.

Especially when he started reading what was on it.

"Let's see here... 'Human Instrumentality Project'? That's what happened? Rei is... Father wants to? Oh my..."

The more that he read, the more he learned about what it was that NERV was actually doing. All the little secrets were on the disc, all the hidden agendas. Technical detail was not his forte, so he didn't understand much of it, but he still managed to get the jist of it.

Which left the question of what to do about what he had learned. He knew that he should do something, but he didn't know what. The only plan that he could come up with at the moment was to:
