“Thank you for coming,” said Julia.
“We are glad to help in whatever way we can,” said Séance.
The former Aura Mage now War Mage had come because of the request. While he could still see daydreams and the dreams of those near him, he knew the real reason was because of Genn. “Have you told the Conclave about this?”
“Not yet,” said Theo, entering the room, the situation too critical to continue to hold a grudge against his former student. “I wanted to make certain that this isn’t another golem of some sort.”
“A wise precaution,” agreed Séance.
“Well then,” said Genn, “let’s take a look at him.”
“Well,” said Genn, “he has a whole past. That’s a lot more than Raphael had.”
Séance nodded. “His current dreams are about food, and that Phoenix. He calls it Saffron.”
Genn nodded. “He fought it once before, killed it to save someone he cared about named Akane.”
“A girlfriend?” asked Brianna, hoping it wasn’t someone who she would need to ... bump aside.
Genn shook her head. “Former love; seems they’ve drifted apart.” She stopped for a bit. “Also seems like his father sold him more often than Brittany goes over the spending limit on her credit cards.”
“Slavery?” asked Theo.
Genn shook her head. “Not entirely. Seems his father sold him off as a prospective husband no less than fifteen times to cover food, lodging, and whatever his father stole.”
“I do hope he is of better moral fiber than that,” said Julia, saddened by the idea that their newest guest might not be better than some of their enemies.
Genn closed her eyes a bit, focusing deeper into the were-cheetah/bat’s mind. “Used to be somewhat better, has improved greatly because of his mother’s urging. Also worked on...”
Genn’s eyes snapped open. “He changes gender!”
“Excuse me?” asked Gina.
“Did you find him in hot water or cold water?” asked the Rakshasa.
“We found him in a canal,” said Gina.
“But the water was hot,” added Theo. “This Saffron had hit it with an earlier attack. I had to use my aura to cool the concrete so that we could rescue him. Why?”
“He has what he calls a Jusenkyo curse, which changes him to female with water colder than body temperature.”
Blinking, Gina hit a few buttons on the console, slightly altering the temperature inside the regeneration tank.
As soon as the fluid temperature dropped below ninety-eight degrees Fahrenheit, the form shifted.
It shrunk a few inches, the waist becoming slender, and breasts developing.
“Wow,” said Gina, as Brittany quickly covered Strypp’s eyes—the only were-cheetah breasts he was going to see were her own.
“Uh dear,” said Julia, “perhaps you should restore him to his birth form.”
“Oh, sorry,” said the blushing scientist as she corrected the temperature.
“Is there anyone we can contact?” asked Theo. He was hoping that the boy wasn’t an orphan, at least, not after what Saffron had done.
Genn nodded. “I’ve found his mother’s phone number and address. He was living somewhere else, but it got destroyed.”
Nodding, Theo headed to the fetch the phone from Gina’s lab while Genn wrote down the information.
“Anything else we should know?” asked Julia. She didn’t want to invade the boy’s privacy like this, but they had to act quickly. She was relatively certain that even Gothwrain had seen the battle, and would dispatch his own people to ensure there were no were-cheetahs there.
“Does he know what he is?” asked Brittany.
Genn’s eyes became sad. “He thinks ... he’s a monster.”
