Ranma stood still in a forest clearing, gripping his weapon tightly. His mother stood by to watch him and make sure he didn’t hurt himself in this exercise. In her opinion, it was far too soon for him to be attempting this technique, but he was stubborn and wouldn’t quit going on about it and pestering her until she caved and let him try.
Their school of kenjutsu was an old and secret one. So much so, in fact, that it was not mentioned in even the most obscure of history texts. It was created long ago to purge malevolent spirits that afflicted humans, and had been handed down in their family from generation to generation. Ranma showed great promise as the inheritor of their family art, for despite his impetuousness, his drive and learning aptitude surpassed all in recent history.
Even mine, his mother admitted to herself silently. Ten years old, and already he’s attempting the first succession technique!
As she watched, he held his sword high. Schooling his breathing, he focused his concentration on the rock set five yards in front of him.
”Shinmei-ryuu ougi, Hiken Zankuu-sen!”
As he shouted the name of the technique, he brought the blade down. A swirling blast erupted from his strike and sped toward his target to explode violently. When the dust cleared, there showed no signs of the rock except a pile of gravel.
”Well done, Ranma. Your form needs a bit of work, but your focus is good. A little more training and you will master this technique.”
The boy turned a beaming face to his mother. “You really think so?”
She smiled. “Mm hmm...” Her face turned slightly stern as she continued. “But I’m not showing you the next one until I see some improvement in your grades, young man!”
”Aw, but mama...”
