Kasumi was in her room, looking at the mirror. Looking at her face. I’ve got to be kind, and gentle, and not yell at Akane when she’s being a brat. She tried smiling. I’d better work on that.
She squinted at her reflection, and then showed a bit more teeth. Then a bit less. I’ve got to be pleasant, and happy, and smile at Nabiki when she’s making a mess in the kitchen. Slightly less teeth. Mom’s kitchen. Crinkle the eyes a bit. My kitchen.
Back straight up some more. I will not look like a baby who just lost her mommy. Checking for streaks. I will be strong, and nice, and not get angry. Posture good, face good. Everything’s good.
She pushed off a bit from her mirror, and spun towards the door. Oh, and I’ve got to ignore Daddy when he’s trying not to cry, either. She slid open her door, gently stepped out into the hallway.
She glanced down towards the guest room. She could hear Akane, sobbing in her room. Still. Again. Whatever. Nabiki, as usual, was quiet. Daddy hadn’t come upstairs yet.
She headed down the stairs, glancing around the living room before heading off to the kitchen. I’ve got to be nice, and do the laundry, and pick up after my slob of a father who can’t keep himself clean, because Mom was the one who did all of that stuff and now everything’s dirty and Nabiki’s made a mess in the kitchen this morning and Akane didn’t clean up after herself and “AAARRGGG!”
The eldest Tendo daughter slammed her eyes shut and pressed herself against the refrigerator. “That was in my out-loud voice, wasn’t it,” she whispered. Opening one eye a crack, she looked around. OK, no one around. Happy Thoughts, Kasumi! The clock read 12:30, so it was time for lunch. I guess I’m the only one can cook, and Nabiki would live off of rick crackers, and Daddy would just DON’T THINK THAT WAY! HAPPY THOUGHS, KASUMI! HAPPY THOUGHTS!
Exhaling, Kasumi looked out the windows, wiping the water (not a tear) from her face, and began boiling water. I still need to work on that.
