Blast to the Past / Lamp Of Mihoshi: Because you never get a second chance to make a first impression. [Episode 55474]

by Kevin Michael Schultz

Pausing in her attempt to make miso soup, Kasumi looked out of the kitchen window. The window was slightly greasy with the steam of the last several day’s worth of cooking, but it was still clear enough to see her father coming towards the house with some girl. Huh? Where’d she come from?

That she was a fighter was obvious; Kasumi had been around enough martial artists to tell. She walks like Mom. That she had just fought her father wasn’t so clear, the look on her father’s face said they did, but the look on her face said they didn’t. Oh, please don’t tell me Dad’s inviting her into the house. Oh, no. I don’t know what to do. Oh crap. Oh, Crap. She swept around the kitchen, opening cupboards at random. Tea! Right! Um, cookies! Yeah, that’ll work. And bread! Yeah, and this tray’ll do, and that cup, and oh no the miso’s boiling over and I don’t know what to do and I’m making a bigger mess and I want to cry but I have to be happy and now daddy’s looking at me and DADDY’s LOOKING AT ME?!?

“Er, hello, Father.”

Said patriarch was standing in the doorway to the kitchen. She could barely see the red-headed woman just behind him, peeking around the corner. As gently as she could, she set the tea service down, incidentally balancing it on top of the cookie tin.

“Kasumi, this is Ranma. Ranma, this is my eldest daughter, Kasumi.” Her father’s voice was strained, almost cracking.

“Heya.” She could hear the rough words coming from the soprano’s throat, but more importantly she could FEEL the older girl’s eyes on the spoiled miso soup pot. Incredulous. Then looking at her. Disbelieving. Accusing. She could feel her throat seize up, her eyes tearing, but darn it she would be happy if it killed her! “Welcome to our home, Ranma-san.” Remember to smile, Kasumi! “Would you like some tea?”

“Um, that’s all right, Kasumi-sa, er, -chan.” The older woman was holding the back of her head for some reason, pulling at her pigtail.

“Ranma will be staying for dinner.” NoNoNoNONONO! I don’t know what to do, and I’ll mess things up, and everyone will yell, and Akane will cry, and you’ll just go upstairs and not come down all night, and it’ll be all my fault!

Kasumi nodded. “Of course, Father.”

“I’ll see to Akane and Nabiki.” With that, Soun left Kasumi’s line of sight, leaving her alone with the red-headed woman.
