While the two fathers were babbling about uniting the schools of Anything Goes, Ranma thought about this. He saw several flaws in their reasoning : he practiced Hakkyokuseiken, not Anything Goes, so this marriage wouldn't unite anything ; he had already enough women troubles to want to add one of these girls to the mix ; he was too young to marry in his opinion and had still things to do before settling down for good. When he pointed out all these points, the duo switched to insults, threats and empty posturing (in Ranma's opinion).
Ranma had been raised by Terry Bogard, a tough and honorable (in a western way) martial artist. However, his experiences in the tournaments and fighting the likes of Vega, Rugal and Akuma had taught him the value of cunning. Soon, a plan formed and was applied.
Ranma took a serious expression and adressed Soun Tendo in a grave voice : "Are you Soun Tendo, master of the school of Anything Goes martial arts ?"
Soun was puzzled by this question since he knew that already but answered nonetheless : "Yes, I am. Why are you..."
Ranma interrupted : "I am Ranma Bogard of the Hakkyokuseiken school of martial arts. I challenge the Tendo dojo for its sign. Will you fight or forfeit ?"
"Boy ! What is this nonsense !?" Genma was took by surprise by this new development.
"Simple. You want to unite your family schools of martial arts. I want to see if they are worth anything. I don't see why I would marry for an art I know nothing about".
Soun Tendo was of course outraged and went into demon-head mode : "YOU DARE SLANDER MY FAMILY ART ! WHY YOU !?"
Ranma didn't budge. When you have faced Shin Akuma head-on, such petty displays were nothing. "I'll ask you a last time. Will you fight me or forfeit your sign ?"
Akane, having regained consciousness in the meantime, understood what Ranma was trying to do. She joined in : "All right ! I accept your challenge ! You and I will..." However Soun returned to normal and with Genma's silent prompting put his foot down (a rarity for the Tendo patriarch) : "Absolutely not, Akane. I will be the one to fight Saotome's son. And after I win, you'll apologize for your conduct and marry one of my daughters"

The fight had been short and embarassing for the Tendo school. Ranma decided to test Soun's defenses and launched a quick Reppu-ken. The man had been so surprised that he was hit while leaving himself wide open. Ranma closed the distance in less than a second, striking with his hard edge maneuver. A shinkuu Nage throw sent him napping, indented into a wall. Ranma did his 'angel wings' victory pose and looked at the spectators. Akane was sighing in desperation over her father's idiocy, she had watched the entire Millionaire fighting and knew he couldn't beat Ranma. Kasumi and Nabiki stood frozen and only said : "Whoa..." Genma's jaw had hit the floor.
Ranma smiled and said : I believe the Tendo dojo's sign is mine now"
