"What did you mean going off like that?! You have responsibilities..."
He saw the little girl with the rough fama and domestic ohma who had grown up as the media's darling.
"...to the rest of the squadron. What about Dita or Jura or myself? If you're not there..."
He saw the little girl who had been a "bad girl" as she tried to find her place in the world.
"...how can we combine if the enemy throws something new at us..."
He saw the little girl who had lost her ohma and fama during the core breech.
"...we can't have pilots going off on their own initiative..." He saw how she had been trapped in an overcrowded escape ship as she was being trapped and trampled.
"...you're not a... Hibiki? Are you okay?"
He saw how she had suffered ostracism and been used and discarded again and again.
"Hibiki? Is something wrong?"
He saw her reinvent herself as the military pilot. She didn't need anyone or anything. She relied on no one. He saw the walls she erected around herself so that she'd never be hurt again.
"Doctor! There's something wrong with Hibiki!"
He saw her concern and her affection. He saw the self she kept sheltered away behind layers of ice.
"Hibiki! What's wrong?"
"Beautiful," said Hibiki Tokai. Once you stripped away these things the aqua colored glow at the center revealed the Core Self. Someone had once said that character was what you looked like in the dark. Hibiki could see now the bright Core shining at the heart of Meia Gisborn. He saw her potential for love and for hate. Her strength and her weakness. When you stripped memory and all the garbage that puts into the psyche, and you get past cultural upbringing and conditioning, and beyond the physical - what's left?
"What? 'Beautiful'? I..." Meia blushed and got angry because she didn't understand why she was blushing.
Duerro checked vital signs. "He's gone through some sort of trauma. His brain wave patterns are odd, even for him. There's an odd harmonance here too. Heartrate and respiration are high. Hmmm."
Hibiki Tokai looked at the beauty shining from the core of Meia Gisborn and noticed a strand coming from it. Tracing it, he noticed two other strands going off into the distance.
