It had been a long while since their dreams were dashed, but the two had never recovered. They wanted to see their familes merged through the marriage of their children more than anything. Alas, it was not to be.
Genma's only son, Ranma, had not fallen for Akane as they had hoped. Things started out well enough. The two had shown definite interest in one another. However, the two had gotten off to a bad start and never recovered.
Still, Ranma and Akane were not the only ones to blame for their engagement breaking down. Instead of switching the engagement over to another Tendo girl, Genma and Soun kept pushing for Ranma and Akane, not realizing the more they pushed, the more their children would resist.
And of course, their were other factors as well, which caused the parents to screw things up for their children. It is true that they wanted their children together, but neither was faitful to their promise. Genma had made engagement after engagment, using his son as a bargaining chip. He wanted something for nothing, and Genma just damned himself, his son's future, and his family's honor.
Also, Soun himself was not innocent by any means. He just wasn't as bad. Soun had engaged one of his own daughters to the Chardin Clan, so that he could eat a nice, expensive French meal.
Thankfully, Ranma had stood by them and tried to deal with all these situations as best as he could. And, for the most part he had dealt with them.
However, as time went on, stress had taken it's toll, and Ranma started to become withdrawn from the rest of them... Almost dealing the rest of the people in Nerima with disdain.
True, Genma and Soun had thought it to do with Ranma's interaction with those foreigners. However, they thought Ranma to have been honorbound by traditional Japanese values and family honor, so they felt that it couldn't be too much of a threat. They felt Ranma would come back to them.
But then Ranma had disappeared for quite some time. The crew were worried, but then they had recieved a letter.
Ranma had gotten married. A girl that they knew about Ranma meeting with constantly, Ranma had married her.
And so, now Genma and Soun sat, alone in bars, drinking themselves into stupors every night... Cursing Ranma and his whore out, for ruining their beautiful dreams of early, lazy retirement.
Oh, they knew they would one day have revenge, (when they wer esober enough) but right now they felt like mourning over the loss of the schools, (since it was MUCh easier to accomplish)
