Last Rat: Only hope [Episode 57732]

by Thrythlind

Lydia turned very quiet at the mention of an arch-mage. She knew one arch-mage, but only one. And he'd be no more inclined to help her than Gothwrain would. That was a rule in war, never give your foes mercy. But, what other choice did she have?

"That's it," she said. "Only an arch-mage? Nothing else?"

"Probably not really," Cologne said. "But I wouldn't trust this kind of damage to anyone else."

"$#$%," Lydia said quietly, and remembered the phone in the next room and quietly shuffled out.

Ranma started to follow but he was stopped by Tofu extending a hand.

"Let her alone for a moment, Ranma," Tofu said.

Lydia picked up the phone and sat down in a chair leaning forward, feeling sick herself from the amount of contact she'd had with silver so far. Her fingers were dead as they pushed the buttons, dialing the number.

The phone rang three times before someone picked it up and answered on the other end.

"Hello? Who is it?" the voice on the other end asked. Lydia, head lying on the counter like a lump held back from speaking still, recognizing the voice at the other end of the phone. "Listen if this is another one of those prank calls, I'm starting this trace thingie right now."

"Britanny Diggers?" Lydia asked in a dead tired voice.

"Yes," Britanny slurred. "Wait, I know that voice. What do you want?"

"I need to speak to your dad," Lydia said in the same tone of voice.

"Right," Britanny said spitefully. "I'm sure, look you little psychopath, just go bother somebody else. I'm hanging up now."

"Don't ^@$#&in' hang up," Lydia snapped, still quietly, trying not to alert the other people in the building. She took a deep breath.

"Listen, all you three have caused is trouble," Britanny said, hanging the phone up.

Lydia winced and leadenly set the phone into the cradle before picking it up and hunting out the redial switch.

Thousands of miles away the phone in the Diggers house rang again. Growlling irritably, she snapped the phone up.

"Is this you again?" she demanded. Predictably, Lydia's voice came over the line again, only on the edge of hysteria, and it sounded like she was weeping.

"Please," she slurred. "Romeo's dead. Moisha's dying."

Britanny froze and considered that for a moment before answering.

"Why not go to your boss then?" she asked angrily. There was silence.

"He's the one that had us killed," Lydia said finally. "Please don't hang up, I just need to talk to your father."
