Aoshi scowled. "Why not?!"
"Because you're not ready yet."
"What?"
"I'll tell you when you both are ready to fight."
"And when will that be?"
"When I say so," the Chinese man told him firmly.
"So how long'll that be?"
Taro shrugged. "However long it takes."
"But why can't we go after them now?!"
"Because you're too young and inexperienced at the moment. Because your parents gave you to me to watch over and protect, and I can't do that if you're running off. And because I say that you can't."
"How d'we get ready then?"
"Simple. You train. And train. And train some more. Until you are prepared for what lies ahead."
"But I want my Mommy and Daddy," Kitsune whimpered into Taro's chest.
"I know, and I can't do anything to bring them back," Taro said, hoping to hell that his attempt at soothing her would work, "But remember that they loved you very much and wanted to protect you." When the girl's sobbing faded to a sniffle, he gave a sigh of relief.
Scowling, Aoshi looked at his guardian. "When d'we start?"
"Soon," Taro told him, "Soon."
The little boy's face tightened a bit, and he nodded while:
