Results of this were that every so often a guy, usually under the age of 25, caught the virus and spent a few weeks becoming an anthropomorphic girl. Otherwise you only got the disease by having sex with a girl who was in the infectious state.
One of the odd things about this was that the incidence of venereal diseases had gone down quite a bit and were practically unheard of now. Practically every guy knew/was related to/had heard of some guy who had caught the virus and begun changing and had turned into a cute and feminine pet. Guys who would risk death or some rotting disease would not risk the very manhood they were trying to prove.
There were normal guys and normal girls. Normal girls were rarer than furry girls, but you could find them. Normal guys were outnumbered quite a bit but discovering that polygamy was not a bad word. Most human girls insisted on being the sole wife though this insistance was becoming more rare as time went on.
The DAS Flu had hit in the 1950s. That was a lot of time for the society to adapt.
Actually this was just the way the timeline had restructured. In actuality Ranma had gotten the Great Will Of The Universe and had been knocked unconscious by Akane - triggering a set of dreams a la "Lathe Of Heaven" that were restructuring reality. This was how everyone (except Ranma) remembered things and how all records would show it has having been, so it really didn't matter.
Ten years prior to Ranma being unconscious in a small crater in the dojo, a pair of mooncats named Luna and Artemis went roaming about. They exclaimed about the strangeness of the society, gawked at the furries, and figured out that their charges were likely sporting tails in this world.
Then, to make things completely bonkers, some fat grubby looking man had grabbed them by the scruffs of their necks and thrown them into a pit!
The NERV of some people!
"Why do you suppose he threw us in here?"
"No clue, Luna."
"Why do you suppose there are so many cats in this pit?"
"Not a clue there, either," admitted Artemis.
"They seem to be starved," observed Luna.
"They've been in here awhile too," added Artemis.
"Ah, he's opening the hatch, he's throwing in... ?!"
"A tied up boy?! It MUST be a cult! Throwing bound children in a pit of starving cats!"
"Tied up with cheap fish sausages," said Luna, her fur poofing.
Luna and Artemis nodded, agreeing in this. Dark Kingdom, no doubt about it. There was just one thing to do.
"Ahhhhh," said Artemis, his cresent moon forehead mark beginning to glow.
"Heeeeee," said Luna, her crescent moon mark also glowing.
Genma was wondering why he kept hearing voices whispering prior to throwing Ranma in, but he couldn't *see* anyone in there.
Perhaps he'd been working too hard?
Then there was an explosion, the lid came off the pit, and cats started flying out of the pit.
