Which proved to be fortuitous for her, as it turned out to be Rei. If there had ever been someone who would know about any secret ways out, she was it. The way that Gendo treated her was as close to doting as he was going to get and she likely knew all the secrets that there would be.
And since the girl wasn't one to pay attention to things beyond what she was told to, she never noticed the catgirl swordswoman jumping out of her hiding space and scratching her with the statue until it had already happened.
It only took a moment afterward for the changes to start. Her ears moved to the top of her head and grew pointed, a tail came out from her behind and her clothing changed. When it finished, Rei was a different girl, no longer just a pilot. Now she was a catgirl:
